Fan Friday: The 5 Things You Need To Know Before You Go

I know what you're thinking... "But Sarah, how will you ever come up with 5 things I need to know about the sports world?! There is no football on!!" Well, where there's a will, there's a way, folks. Plus, hello, National Signing Day was this week y'all! Let's get started, shall we?

This one might make you an angry elf.

Let's actually start here: did you know there are two current full-time female refs in the NBA this season? This is news to me, I didn't know there were any female refs in the NBA. That's pretty cool!

So last night, rookie ref Lauren Holtkamp, shown above (pretty girl too, right?), ref'd the Clippers vs Cavs game. The Clippers were T'ed up (given technical fouls) five times on the night. That's a lot.

Clippers Point Guard, Chris Paul, took to attacking Lauren after the game. Mind you, there are 3 refs on the court each night, not just 1...

"The tech that I get right there was ridiculous. I don't care what nobody says, I don't care what she says; that's terrible. There's no way that can be a tech. ...

That's ridiculous. If that's the case, this might not be for her."

Paul assured everyone, of course, that his comments had nothing to do with her being a female. I don't have an issue with complaining about calls, but how often do you hear a player question a ref's whole career path? "This might not be for her..."
I dunno, that last sentence, just rubbed me the wrong way. What do you think?
Side note: the Clippers have THE MOST TECHNICAL FOULS IN THE LEAUGE. Just thought I would include that little statistic for you.

Tiger Woods sucks. If that's the case, golf might not be for him... (hah, see what I did there?)

Yesterday, Tiger withdrew for the 3rd time in his past 9 tournaments.

He said last week he had no back issues since his return to golf in December. But sometime on the back nine, he began complaining of back issues he earlier said he didn't have. He blamed it on a 2 hour fog delay. I hate it when that big-bad-bully fog attacks me! So frustrating.

Even though Tiger has been playing horrific golf as of late, Sports Center felt the need to show every last stroke he took in the Farmers Insurance Open. Makes sense.... I have no idea who is in the lead at the tournament, but I do know what all 11 of Tiger's bunker shots looked like.

College Football's National Signing Day took place on Wednesday, and I've got the top ten recruiting classes for you! They are as follows...

Did you see Tennessee came in 5th? Not sure if you saw? #GBO

Facebook is humorous. I commented on Bleacher Report's Facebook status a couple of days ago, and hilariousness, and incoherent, very poor grammar ensued. I just feel that, unless you know how to properly use your and you're, then you shouldn't be allowed to troll people on the internet.
If you can use your and you're properly... then by all means, please troll on!

BRB... gotta go shut you're dumbass up.
And I wonder why I get into bar fights....

This isn't sports related, but it is awesome and is for sure something you need to know! If you remember last year, Helene and I hosted a Valentine's Day linkup. This year, we will be hosting another one this coming Friday, a week from today, February 13th

Venus Trapped in Mars

Fan Friday can still continue as normal too. Come linkup anything Valentine's Day related, Fan Friday related, or if you are really talented you can link up a post that is about a Sporty Valentine's Day..... i.e. how you would like Rob Gronkowski to lick a box of chocolates off bring you a box of chocolates.

Just a suggestion.

  1. YAY for Tennessee!! I can't wait for the Fall/subsequent seasons to come! But I'm also a Pats fan after moving to Boston, so I'm slightly an angry troll at your Brady comment....even if it was hilarious lol

  2. I love this post because I really learned so much. That's awesome that there are female refs in the NBA but yeah, sounds like the clippers just foul a lot. Tiger is in Bitch mode??
You schooled that guy. 220 likes?? That is amazing. You're basically a celeb.

  3. LOL Your Facebook comments crack me up! Sounds like me when people start talking trash about my Spurs! I get so defensive. And it's harder being a Spurs fan in the city of Dallas! LOL

  4. oh my god that is the best exchange ever. I love it. that guy seems credible, with a last name like flocka right?

also it sounds like he's absolutely making that statement because she's a woman. he's just being a crybaby. maybe instead of criticizing her choices, he should try to play by the rules.

also. did you see they followed Tiger from the course all the way to his car? He looked like he was in a lot of pain -- so I was pretty impressed that he didn't try to run anyone over with his car.......

  5. I would just like to say it again - TENNESSEE!

  6. #4 is why I just can't stand facebook! Lol, you're just having a little fun and made a hilarious joke and someone feels the need to talk complete trash and cuss a stranger out. I can't stand people like that, good for you for taking it all in stride ;)

  7. You truly are my spirit animal. I'm partial to recruiting class #6 personally, but my fiance is a bit jazzed about Tennessee's haul. Also, that was absolutely a sexist remark. Unsurprisingly, sexism is rampant in the sports world. I never felt any kind of chauvinism or sexism in my life until I went to grad school for sports journalism. It's revolting.

  9. I'm a fan of Brady/The Patriots but the basic bitch mode comment had me laughing so hard. Your comebacks kept the laughter coming. But Tiger Woods geesh maybe it's time to retire. Didn't he score the worst a tourney has ever seen Super Bowl weekend?

    1. YES!!!!! You are so correct there... I think he shot like an 82!! Dear lord!

  10. I'm not allowed to comment on Facebook articles because I get way too worked up about people who can't even properly express themselves with proper grammar and spelling. I was surprisingly excited to see many of the signing day rankings, with the exception of Ohio State. They can go to the bottom, thanks.

  11. My husband showed me the video of the comment Chris Paul made and asked my opinion on it. I personally didn't take it in a sexist way. I took it as he was complaining about what he thought was a bad call and did take a dig at her ability to referee, but I didn't take it as "you suck at being a ref because you're a girl". Just my opinion!

    ReplyDelete
  12. BAH! Basic Bitch Mode! I need you to do a tshirt that has his face it it stat! haha!

I agree... Paul's comment was Technically Foul!

    ReplyDelete
  13. nah, I totally disagree about the Chris Paul thing. I think he just used "her" because it's the right pronoun. to me, that sentence doesn't mean that she's not making good calls because she's a woman, just that she makes bad calls and so she shouldn't be a referee. Would people feel better about it if he had said "this might not be for this individual"?

  14. Facebook be cray. Why can't people take a joke anymore, geeze!! And really, your and you're, not that difficult!

  15. Okay, a few things. 1 (regarding #1) - That's basically him going, "I'm not a misogynist but a woman shouldn't be in a man's job." Stupid. 2 - I know that Tiger is on a downward spiral with his career, but the fog could actually cause pain. I respond to change in pressure system, so it could be sunny today but if it's going to rain tomorrow I feel it. Not to stand up for Tiger (because I don't really like him and it very well could be a lame excuse) but it IS possible. And 4 - People are stupid, especially on Facebook.

  16. Bahaha. OMG. This is hilarious. I would have written back...."It's shut YOUR dumbass up." And no. I'm not "bitch mode". I'm a bitch that uses correct grammar. Have a nice night!"

  17. OMG that Facebook conversation was AMAZING. I feel like I always get in arguments with stupid people online too hahaha :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. I can't even get past the "you know how many sacks he take." Seriously?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I don't think I'd like reading about sports nearly as much if it weren't for you.

  20. Facebook fights are funny (most of the time). I wish I'd taken a screenshot of one I was involved in once. I was being criticized because I made a comment about being pro-marriage equality. A guy from my high school or former church youth group told me that I couldn't call myself a Christian and be pro gay marriage. Banter went back and forth. A third party, another former high school friend who lives two blocks away from 1st guy, jumped in and said something to the effect of "I know the woman you are sleeping with and cheating on your wife with, so I wouldn't be questioning anyone's Christian beliefs or actions right now." And.......boom!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Your number 4 makes me oh-so-happy. I get in fights like that ALL the time with guys. They think they know absolutely everything because they have a set of balls. Balls don't equal sports knowledge!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Haha your trolling is killing me. I can't help but read all the comments on news stories, etc., these days. They often contain WAY more information (or misinformation?) than the articles themselves.

P.S. - I had no idea there were female refs in the NBA! Rock on!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Omg everything about that FB post ... you win, you win.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Chris Paul was way out of line. I'm so glad to see a woman ref. Go, Lauren. Good catch, Sarah!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I just think it's kind of weird that he targeted her--it wouldn't have been that big of a thing (just another player being a baby about getting called out), but when he adds that line "maybe this isn't for her," it does sound a little sexist. How many players have ever said that about a male ref? Also, I shouldn't even allow myself to read Facebook comments (or comments online) because I just get upset. However, I was happy to see that random people stood up for you! Glad to see the comments section isn't run entirely by trolls.

  26. Five things I didn't know..............just saying

    ReplyDelete
  27. LOL at FB trolls. National Signing Day: AKA get nothing done at work day and refresh Twitter all day long. Or maybe that's just me ;)

    ReplyDelete
  28. OMG LOVE your post on Bleacher Report! I feel the same way and know that feeling of bar fights.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I heard about the Clippers/ Chris Paul thing and it pissed me OFF. He NEVER would have said that if the ref were a man. Never. And he knows it.

Remember when Tiger was so young and full of promise?

And seriously,. that Facebooker needs some lessons in how to internet.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Since college baseball and Valentine's weekend coincide, I guess I better thing of something fun to post so I can link up with you this time around........ #ohthechallenge

  31. I'm finally just back into the blogging game and this post made my night. Especially your Basic Bitch Mode comment. Seahawks "fans" are probably the worst people I've ever met. Mainly because you can ask them about their team from 4 years ago and no one knows they even existed. Also I've been drinking wine and I need to vent because Broncos fan.

    ReplyDelete
  32. And he sounds like a bitter bitch who couldn't get a date.

This is why folks tend not to comment stupid shit on my facebook. They know not to come for me unless I send for them.

    ReplyDelete
  33. your comments made me laugh so hard! Screw that guy. It reminds me of facebook like 2 days after the superbowl a friend of mine posted an anti-seahawks meme. Fine, fine. But someone commented on it and was like "AND they can't win superbowls!" I was like....I mean...they literally won LAST year. that's just plain factually wrong. Lol
