There will be 3 parts to this post. So if you hate something, just skip to the next section.
If you hate sports (*spoiler alert* you can skip to section 2)
Part 1: Golf 101 What does it all Mean?
This will be a really quick rundown. The full rules and greater detail will need its own post on another day!

Bogey = bad. Eagle = Tiger Woods
Moving on.

Part 2: My Weekend Shenanigans with Miss Pretty Face Sami
As I'm sure you gathered from this highly brief tutorial above, I played in a golf tournament for work this weekend! Other than Top Golf last week, I hadn't played in several years, so needless to say I was a bit nervous.

Golf was what I did with my Dad from age 8 on up. I was really good (yes, I'm allowed to toot my own horn from time-to-time). Well he passed away on June 2, 2006. He suffered a stroke during a routine heart catherization and passed away about two weeks later. I don't talk much about him, that time in the hospital or about the pain of losing my father at 19. I find people get uncomfortable and don't know what to say to me. That is the last thing I ever want (it is just same old bubbly me, after all!) so I just keep it all in. Oddly enough, many of my dear friends I have made over the past 7 years never even met him.

Well, I took that as a TRUE sign from above when my company did its first golf tournament in 4 years on the exact anniversary of my Dad's death. I knew Dad was sayin, "Sar, get out there and LET THE BIG DOG EAT!" This is golf slang for, step up to the tee and KILL IT!

And that is exactly what I did. I'm not sure if it was the beautiful weather, the new golf clubs I bought for the occasion or Dad helping me out but I played one helluva golf round. It was really really really fun. I know Dad was watching.

Oh, and someone else had to buy me a beer. Why you ask?
Well, I got closest to the pin on a par 3.
And..... because I got my first EAGLE ever ever ever ever!! EEK!
Needless to say. It was a good day. Then Gee got to go swimming. And by that I mean his paws went swimming. He then promptly got right back out, never to do that again.
.... And finally part 3 (are you exhausted yet?)

  2. This is an awesome golf-y story and I know your dad would have been proud! I lost my dad when I was really little to a heart attack and I can totally relate to that weird 'OMG I'm horrified I just brought up something terrible' look people give when you when you tell them about it. Congrats on your Eagle! KILLIN IT

  3. Best (and cutest) explanation of golf ever! :) How awesome to have such a special connection with your father. I'm sure he is always proud of you as he watches you live.

  4. I loved that Golf piece. Congrats on your Eagle - I bet your dad would have been proud. You definitely earned a beer. My husband is horrified because I told him I want to try golfing this summer. We'll see if he allows me on the course with him. I kick his ass in mini-golf so he might just be intimidated.

  6. so my company used to have a golf outing.
until the year i went, everyone got too drunk, my co-worker flipped a golf cart, and some guy tried to kiss me twice right in front of shitler and there were some mild fist-ti-cuffs. needless to say we're banned from that course.

    p.s. i love golf.

  9. Haha he's not a fan of the water? Hawkeye would never go in. Never.
I suck at golf. I worked at a golf course... driving the beer cart :) That's about all the golf I can handle.

  12. Thanks for the golf explanation-- I really have always wondered what a birdie or an eagle was! Also, I totally relate about feeling awkward about making others feel awkward when you mention a dead parent. I noticed that I speed my way through a sentence to try to gloss over it, which only backfires when people say, "wait, what was that?" "Uh, well, when my dad died...." "Ohhh..."
Anyway, I am glad that you got to do something so fitting as kicking ass at golf on the anniversary of his passing.

  13. I understanding the score bit of golf but not the whole 'how and why people play' bit. Maybe I'll learn one day. matt seems to like it but I've yet to go out on the course with him.
also, I completely understand how you feel about your father (mine passed away when I was 22).

  18. Aww so glad you got back out there! I've never heard this big dog eating line but you know I like dogs so I'll take it. Teach me how to golf so I can see all the hottie guy golfers this summer. Nothing sexier than a guy in golf gear.

  19. Congrats on the Eagle! :) I've never tried golfing (unless practicing in the yard counts?), but it seems fun. :) And great giveaway.

  22. Hey, you had more eagles than Tiger did!

My dad passed away about a year and a half ago and he was big into golfing. I only ever played once but we used to watch it together a lot.
