Fan Friday: Go Red!

The color red doesn't dominate my wardrobe by any means. I only  have a handful of red items including a cardigan and a red dress. My t-shirts have a splash of red here and there, but for the most part my collection is dominated by Tennessee Orange, and different shades of blue for the Cowboys, Rangers, Braves and Mavs.

Like most women, I tend to think I have nothing to wear. As I went to my closet this morning I flipped through every last thing I owned and for some reason put on the one solid red dress that I rarely wear. As I was driving to work this morning, I heard on the radio that it was National Wear Red Day for Heart Disease Awareness in Women. I chuckled to myself and thought, hah! Funny I should pick this dress, that I never wear, today of all days.

Without red surrounding my day-to-day wardrobe, I forget about the color red. I forget that there is a red scarf rolled up in my scarf organizer, I forget that I have a plaid shirt that is equal parts red as it is black, I forget that I have red tights that I always wear on Christmas Day, I forget that red is as dominant of a color for the Braves and Rangers as blue is. You forget about red until it is right in front of your face and you're like, "Oh yeah, I do have red!"

Going forward, I want to do a better job of remembering red. Red in this scenario actually meaning heart disease. We do all these things to monitor breast cancer, but what are we (what am I?) doing to monitor heart disease, the number ONE killer in women. The best thing you can do is bring awareness through the color red. Because guess what, red is in your life, whether you realize it or not. And just when you aren't thinking about it is when it will pop up, just like it did for me today.

So my Fan Friday post today is dedicated to the color red! Do you realize just HOW MANY TEAMS have red in their logo? I think you'll be as surprised as I was.

Major League Baseball (MLB) - 15 out of 30 teams. Half of the teams wear red!

National Basketball Association (NBA) - 13 out of 30 teams
National Football League (NFL)- 12 out of 32 teams

National Hockey League (NHL) -  14 out of 30 teams

So out of all of the teams in the four major sports leagues, 54 teams wear red. That's 44% of all teams! Crazy how much red there is out there, isn't it?

  2. It's very American to have red white and blue colors, so I'm not surprised! My favorite teams don't though (Hawkeyes, Bears, KY Wildcats)

  4. I never really thought about my closet like that. Honestly, I know I have a few red shirts from working at Target... and I have some floral prints with red in them for sure. But I wonder what else I actually have? Guess I'll find out over the weekend when I clean out my closet!

  5. Working in the cardiology department at a hospital, wearing red is a huge thing today, so great job for wearing red (even on accident) for heart disease!!

  7. I think I better go check my closet. If you ask me now, I'll probably say I don't own any red, but I bet you I could dig out at least 2 things. That's usually the way it is!

  12. Every team I support in every sport has red in their colours, it's not a conscious thong just a huge coincidence! I love to wear a bit of red too.

  13. I love the color red but hardly have any red clothes! I will have to put something red on today though and show my support.

  14. What a cute dress and support the cause (even unknowingly). Red Sox and Patriots at least have red.

  15. Plus the Astros used to be that brick red color. My parents even painted one of their bedrooms that color and put all their astros stuff there! (Interestingly, not the only sports-theme room in their house! Non-astros and football memorabilia go in the basement with the tv.) I will say that red is not my personal favorite, so I was excited when the Astros went back to blue/orange!
However, that dress looks great on you!

  18. Color coordination my dear! It makes life much easier in situations like these. I’ve got a chunk of blue shirts hanging in my closet courtesy of the Padres and the Yankees…and I’ve actually got a couple of Padres tees that have (a little) red in them with our military logo! So you can add another tally for baseball!

  19. Thank you for sharing Wear Red day! I'm rocking red today too, and I think it's really important to bring awareness to the #1 killer of women. The fact that you tied that into sports...just awesome. :)

  21. I love your dress with the polka dot shirt underneath! I too forget about all the actual red I own. Today I just happened to throw on a burgundy scarf- hopefully that still counts.

  22. Love your outfit - I don't have much red in my closet. I think most of the red that I am rocking is for the Texas Rangers.

  24. So trueeee! I thought the same thing as I got ready for work yesterday and we have a AHDA thing going on through April so we're "Supposed" to wear red and I dug through my closet thinking, wow, I don't have much red! Time to shop right?! Ha! Love your dress! :)

  25. I'm wearing red today too..! It's my red Canadian 2010 Olympic Jersey... and it is oh so beautiful. I never realized how much red there is all over. As I look around my living room- I see red; red Fender Strat, red in the Canadian flag in the window (for the Olympics of course), a red toy piano, oh the list goes on and on. Yah red and by that- I mean heart disease awareness.

  26. I kind of want to go and check for other colors now too, I bet blue would be really dominate as well.

  30. I LOVE red! It's totally my favorite color and has been for a while (after going through teal and green phases in my younger years). There are a TON of teams/schools with red as their designated color. In fact, I applied to grad schools based on those that sported the color red! Yes, I know that sounds totally bizzare.

But, in all seriousness, red on the first Friday in February isn't the only time to celebrate hearts. This week is Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) Awareness week. CHDs are the most common congenital defect, where 1 in 100 U.S. babies are born with a heart condition. This is higher than the number of all childhood cancers combined! Seriously. And how come more people don't talk about this?
