5 Hair Trends I'm Bringing Back

1. Rolling up athletic gauze and using it as a headband
Back in my day, we had to roll up athletic gauze to make a headband. Kids these days have actual sport headbands that stay in place and I'm really jealous. I played basketball and softball (I'm sure you're real shocked to hear that) and before every game started I would raid the trainer's first aid kit, grab as much gauze as I could get away with and have myself a little flyaway taming party!

2. Ah yes, thank you middle school Sarah, you now bring me to my next Hair Trend: Pigtails.
Pigtails, whether it be of the French variety or the non-French variety, were my jam. And by were, I mean I was rocking these like last week. Who doesn't want to look flipping adorable without having to even stick a comb in your hair? In fact, they look better uncombed! Yes, I'll be bringing these back.

3. And what is the only thing that could make Pigtails better? Ribbon.
Who would have known that I was subconsciously setting myself up for blogger transitions all along? I love ribbon. Ribbon as a headband, ribbon tied in a bow, sometimes I even wore ribbon as a belt, cause, apparently I couldn't afford anything other than spools and spools of ribbon. Well, ribbon and stolen athletic gauze. Please let's have a movement and take back the ribbon.

4. Hair Wraps
There wasn't a vacation, a basketball tournament in Florida, a trip to the beach where I didn't get a hair wrap. There also wasn't a three month period after a vacation, a basketball tournament in Florida or a trip to the beach when I didn't have to cut the hair wrap out of my head because it had rotted all that hair off.

5. Big Curly Frizzy Hair
Here are the days of flat irons, round brushes, curling wands and dry bar. Gone are the days of I may have just stuck my finger in an electrical socket. Let's stop torturing our hair, and instead let it be free? Who is with me?

What hair trends are you bringing back?

-----
And now for a girl who is lucky enough to have fabulous hair, Stevie from Colorful Commotion. Stevie is a Virginia Tech fan, but I won't hold that against her (at least not at this very moment, I can't say the same for September 10, 2016). I get so darn giddy when my girls send me Drinking Games, so without further adieu, take it away Stevie!!

Hey VTIM readers! I'm Stevie and I blog over at Colorful Commotion. I'm a grad student (but only for a few more months!) and life has been pretty interesting lately. My husband and I got married last year, packed up and moved our lives a week before Thanksgiving, and now we're figuring out the next steps. Well, he is. I spend a lot of time watching Criminal Minds and napping with my cat.

Anyway, when Sarah suggested a drinking game for my guest post, I knew exactly what I wanted to write about. This past weekend, I helped with my best friends surprise proposal, and have officially entered into bridesmaid territory. She and I literally share walls between our two apartments, so this will be a huge part of my life. And while I truly couldn't be happier... we all know that being a bridesmaid has it's challenges.

So, while most drinking games have a time limit - the Super Bowl, or the Bachelor, for example; this is a long term thing. There are times, as a bridesmaid, when you are gonna need some guilt free drinking. So, without further ado, I bring you:

So. When, as a bridesmaid, are we drinking?

  • Every time you hear the proposal story. Again.
  • Anytime you have to try on a bridesmaid dress, whether you liked it or not.
  • When the engagement pictures come in. Because you KNOW you'll be helping with Save The Date's for the next month.
  • When the bride sends a picture of a dress you don't like. Get drunk if she buys the dress.
  • The bachelorette party. duh.
  • Anytime a cliche occurs
    • "You can TOTALLY wear that dress again!"
    • "I found this on pinterest"
    • "We're crafting my centerpieces"
Don't get me wrong - i'm beyond excited to be a bridesmaid! This girl stood by my side on my wedding day, and I will 100% be there for her. But, i'm gonna get some wine nights out of the process!

----

In the event that anyone, ever (hello?! anyone?!) makes me a bridesmaid, I'll be playing!

  2. GO HOKIES!! :) Sorry, had to do it! I used to be all about ribbon...and headbands. I'm actually STILL all about headbands, and recently my department director said "are you wearing a tiara?" Yes. Yes I am.
p.s. Did you get tickets to the VT/UT match-up at BMS?!?! I'm dying for some tickets over here. That's where I grew up, so I don't have to pay for a hotel--YES.

  3. I am cracking UP! I used to play softball (for 13 years, 2 years in college) and I still rocked the rolled up gauze at the age 19. That was 3 years ago. Don't tell anyone, though. I'm pretty sure my cool score just dropped to -13. And bows. I rocked bows until I was 19. But that's a rule; no bow, you like girls. And no, no I don't.

  4. There is too much to love about this post. I still wear gauze in my hair to run, except I have upgraded to lime green because its my favorite color and the sports store sells it in every color. Oh and the curls, I can't even tell you what my ginger fro was like back in the day, and still shows up in the summer, it's too damn hot to care.

Oh and I love the bridesmaid drinking game, planning weddings these days suck!

  5. Awww that picture of you horseback riding is precious:) I think I'm gonna bring back the "bun pigtails" with a bandana!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Pigtails!!! But for me, its the don't pull your ponytail all the way through, so its flops there, and then add a ribbon or HUGE ass bow. I would also bring back the feathered bangs, or the wave bang as we did where you make wave with your bangs to the wide...

  7. Ah yes when your hair fell out after having a hair wrap, who could forget the horror of the first time that happened?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hahaha love both of these!! The game is awesome and will get you crunked. lol. And I love the hair bit. I totally did all of that and thought I was the shit!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. OMG hair wraps- I remember those!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I am all about the pigtails - I wore them almost every day in high school.

    ReplyDelete
  11. aww you were the cutest. my favorite is the ribbon belt and in the hair. perfect. classy. i want to bring all of these bad boys back.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Ummmm what if I'm still doing the athletic wrap as a headband thing? Because I never stopped...

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm all for the braids. Pigtail braids, french braids, dutch braids, waterfall braids, etc. So those pigtails are winners in my book.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The pre-wrap/gauze headband is so classic I can't even stand it! Sometimes I didn't even roll it up, just folded it in half so I had a nice thick headband....

    1. You trendsetter you. Thinking outside the box, love it.

  15. I never got into hair ribbons - we were still doing scrunchies!! I did gymnastics and we all wore Shannon Miller crushed velvet leotards with matching scrunchies - I'm sure we looked so cool. That may be a trend, however, that I don't need to come back!

  16. Hair wraps were all the rage in middle school! So were those terrible half cornrow inspired styles we did in basketball. Nothing keeps your hair out of your face like athletic tape though!

    ReplyDelete
  17. OMG the gauze. All the girls on my volleyball team in high school did the gauze headband. Every time I tried it just rolled off my head.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Bridesmaid's drinking game is genius, I love it.
I rock braiding pigtails all the time. They're a wonderful look on me! I even put a ribbon in with one of the strands, usually Hawkeye yellow for tailgating,

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ok, this is hilarious!!! I was allll about the ribbon too!! In fact, I still wore bows in my hair until I was in my 20s. Sad, I know. But that ribbon is just so damn versatile!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. You had your pre-wrap game on point! What about those velcro ties that would hold your sleeves up with cutesy softball or basketball graphics on them? This post is me except for the hair wraps!

    1. I remember one Christmas being SO EXCITED when I got those soccer velcro clip thingys...

  21. you should be happy to know that my little sis plays bball in high school and still picks pre-wrap over headbands and it makes me so proud.

    ReplyDelete
  22. yes, yes yes, to ribbon. I wear / use it on everything. And I'm also feeling the pigtails and frizzy hair.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm not gonna even try to lie...I STILL wear the athletic (prewrap) gauze in my hair quite often when going to the gym. I know it may not be trendy and hip, but it works 1000000x better than any of those cute bands do. Don't worry, it's only for SERIOUS workouts.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It really does. They stay in place, so many of the bands now just roll off your head!!!

      Delete
  24. girl I will rock a gauze headband still haha, I even used medical tape right on the top of my head one time to hold back by super stylish bangs in high school during a soccer game. So hip.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh man! We had some similar hair trends, why was ribbon such a hot commodity? I love the bridesmaid drinking game! I will have to use it in a few months!

    ReplyDelete
  26. This is hilarious! I totally rolled up some of that athletic gauze for headbands all the cool kids were doing it! ;-) ahhhh the ribbons I still cringe. The pictures of me in college with the pink ribbon around my neck....I mean honestly Amanda it's not a necklace....and of course it had to match my corresponding tube top....the horror

  27. Pigtails, particularly of the braided variety, are the best thing ever. If my stupid hair would ever grow back again, instead of sitting here in stunted refusal to extend itself or even act like it's trying, I'd throw that shit back in pigtail braids all the days, like I used to. And sometimes I'd even get really fancy and wrap a ribbon around my head like a headband, and then braid it into the braids, and then wrap it around the hair ties at the bottom, just cuz I know I looked bad ass. YES to all of these things.

  28. I've been thinking about what the hell I can do with my mop these days. I feel like I need a change, but there's no way I'm chopping my hair off again. ( I did that two years ago and it's finally long again!) I love the piggy tails but rarely sport them. I love your big hair days. I say- go back to that.. Be free Sarah! :)

  29. Oh my gosh I used to LOVE hair wraps. So much so that even now, as a 27 year old, my sister will STILL be like "Oh Denise look! They do hair wraps! You better go get one" every time we walk down the Venice Beach Boardwalk. And is it sad that I would totally still get one?! I loved those things!!

  30. Big frizzy hair is my life!!! I just know they will charge me way extra on a keratin treatment since my hair is legit 36+ inches long now :( I didn't know about the gauze thing...

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hahaha these hair trends! I never got a wrap on vacation but one day I will, even though I'm 20.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Why was athletic gauze so cool to wear as a headband?! I remember sneaking into the athletic trainers office to steal some. I thought I was so cool. && hair wraps. yea those were all fun until you took them out and you had a dread lock growing.

    ReplyDelete
  33. RIBBONS!! I had a ribbon in every color in high school. Sometimes I wish I was still in high school so I could tie ribbons into my ponytails. I just don't think I could pull that off as a 25 year old.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Why can't big, curly, frizzy hair come back into style?! I'm rockin' it today and am pretty sure no one is impressed.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The world really needs the banana clip to make a come back.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I still rock the pigtails every so often! Besides that dude was hawt so it worked! :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hair wraps! Oh my!!! How I wanted one for SO long and it took forever for my parents to agree. I was on cloud nine for weeks! ...the good 'ole days!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I need my hair to grow a few more inches before I rock the pigtails. I'm thinking that'll be my new look come summer 2014.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I may have been rocking the pigtails yesterday for a while... they're always in style!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Definitely used ribbon to tie our sleeves during softball! Did you ever use those colorful rubber bands for braces where you would put your hair in mini pony tails and then you split the pony tail in half and combine it with the other half of the one next to form the next row of pony tails? It was the cooler version of corn rows. I'd like to bring that back. And I also always had short hair during softball season, so I would throw my hair in two spiky messy buns. Totally made me look like a Japanimation character! I actually still do wear my hair like that though!

  41. Ohh the hair wrap! That was like the highlight of my beach vacations back in the day.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Ah the ribbons totally take me back to club volleyball when we had different crazy ribbons for each tournament, and hten after would add it to the collection tied to our team bags. Insanity.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh, those hair wraps!! :P I never had one, but I think nearly all of my friends did at one point or the other. For real though--big curly hair needs to be in, I'm trying my best to make it look cool! :P

    ReplyDelete
  44. Those aren't pigtails, those are braids. Don't get it twisted, girl!!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. hahah love this! i could never wear ribbon headbands, they would always roll off my head! weird shaped head?! maybe! xo jillian - cornflake dreams

    ReplyDelete
  46. Haha. Oh Geez. I forgot about the gauze "Pre-wrap" headbands. They were a soccer necessity as well. Love it!

  47. Oh god... Right in the childhood! My head always rejected ribbons and head bands on every type (including the gauze)... So I stuck to pig tails ;)

    ReplyDelete
  48. I still love pigtailrs! in college, I had a box of different colored ribbons for all occasions. I still have that box and still break it out when necessary!

  49. Wait pigtails and ridiculously curly hair aren't in style?! That's like 90% of my hair styling.

    ReplyDelete
  50. That prewrap was totally the cool thing to do when I was in highschool! Not going to lie, my friends and I may have gone to a sports store just to buy different colors of it! And then we would rip our hair out trying to get it all untangled after the games so there's that...

    ReplyDelete
  51. Pigtails are always a good idea. I have come to the conclusion that my head is just oddly shaped because headbands/gauze have never stayed put in my hair. They always just slide off the back of my head! :(

  52. I was all about pigtails back in the day - it was my go to. Let's bring them back!!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I used to loooveee using pre-wrap as a headband! I also did the side pony tail thing for a while. It's really embarrassing because my passport picture is still a picture of me from high school with a side pony tail and everyone makes fun of me.

  57. YES TO THE ATHLETIC GAUZE HEADBANDS!!! (although, we called pre-wrap!)

And bows? Girl. I still wear those in my pontail. i'm adorable. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Daaaaang girl. You rocked those hairstyles! I used to wear pigtails all the dang time. It was the only thing my hair would do. Still rocking the giant curly hair. Giant curly hair life is the only life I know.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Ribbons were my shit! I mean all day, every day! Every volleyball game someone was in charge of bringing a brand spanking new ribbon for everyone to wear. I probably spent more money on ribbon than anything else in high school!

    ReplyDelete
  60. OMG this feels like a recap of my hair styles middle school through high school! I love this!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Hahaha, love this. I forgot all about the beauty that are hairwraps! Oh my.

    ReplyDelete
  62. omg you were so damn cute!!! :D and still are, obvs :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Um. I relate to this post more than I care to admit. Please tell me you went on a tropical vacation and got the corn rows with the beads? PLEASE.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Ahh you were one of those athletes with the pre-wrap on their heads...as a former college athletic trainer we would always joke that if you worked with a girls team you would have to always bring extra b/c they'd steal it for their hair haha That stuff ain't cheap, but I'll forgive you :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. HOKIE HOKIE HOKIE HI!!!!!
Also, I'm bringing back the high messy bun paired with the elastic headband that ALL the lacrosse girls wore in high school. It's just so easy!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Lololololol!!! I totally was obsessed with the hair wrap thing... and ribbons... and pig tails! Thanks for the throwback! ;)

  68. The problem with short hair is that absolutely none of these work! Except maybe the ribbon, which I might be rocking soon. And I remember wanting hair wraps soooooo bad when I was a kid but my mom was too afraid I would get a disease from having them done. ha!
