Where Are All The Mediums?

I typed out this post title about 6 times. Where are all the medium sized girls? I used the word medium because I couldn't come up with another word.

Normal? No, normal is not the right word, we are all normal.

Big Girls? Big girls is 100% not the right word either. Bigger is offensive, no one wants to be labeled as a big girl.

Curvy girls? That isn't it either. I know size 2 girls that have beautiful curves. The female body is curved, the world is not flat. Curvy (in my opinion) is actually a negative word that we have somehow revamped to mean sexy, but the underlying thing you're implying is not skinny. And I mean WE --- WOMEN --- have revamped that word. We have turned the word curvy, into a term that is used as a positive description for girls over the size of 8.

I'm not thin. I'm not a 0-6. I'm also not plus size. I'm not a 14-20. I've mentioned before that I have serious self-perception issues, and I think it has just occurred to me why. There is no one like me (or you or you or you or you or you or you) putting themselves out there. There are thin celebrities, there are plus sized celebrities. And the thing that really sparked this whole realization for me... there are thin fashion bloggers and there are plus sized fashion bloggers.

Where on earth are the size 8-12s? Why are there no fashion blogs for this size? And furthermore, what are we called? We aren't small, we aren't x-large... what are we? Are we mediums? Are we larges? Are we marges?

I was telling Helene yesterday that it feels like there is an odd scale of confidence among women in the fashion blogging world ....

0-6 = confident
8-12 = they don't exist, because they are self-conscious and apparently hiding
14-20 = confident

What is wrong with all of us in the middle? Where are we? Why can't/don't we feel as good about ourselves and our bodies as everyone else does?

Maybe it is because of the guides that show "swimsuits to flatter every body type". I click them every single time, as if I'm going to be presented with leggings and a long sweater in bikini form.  Instead I'm greeted by a size 4 with big boobs, a size 0 with with small boobs, a size 6 with a perfect "big booty" as they call it and a size 16.

Ok well, what do I wear? First of all, I should offer a quick disclaimer, no bathing suit "flatters" my body type, unless the bathing suit is somehow a fit and flare knee-length sundress. If you have my "body type", whatever type that is, a bathing suit is simply a torture device that makes you cry and hate pool party invites.

*declines pool party invitation. host asks, "what, you don't like swimming?" I love swimming, I don't want to be in a bathing suit standing next to the size 6 with the "big booty". thanks.*

I want someone to recommend a pair of shorts that don't make me pull them off immediately, or someone to recommend a pair of ripped denim that is not boyfriend style. But most of all, I just want what every other size has, and that's a recommendation for flattering, fashionable items that look good on the medium body type.

Is that too much to ask? So where are you mediums?? Come out and play, inspire our size group to walk with confidence, inspire others our size to start their own fashion blogs, and most importantly, let me click all your affiliate links!

And please, if there is a fashion blog run by a medium, please leave their link in the comments section below!!

  1. YES! I love this! I am a 14-20 and I agree. I wish there were more fashion blog geared to our size!

  2. Isn't it crazy how ridiculous our world is? Being a "bigger girl" rocking a size 14/16 the reason I'm confident is because I really don't have another choice. I can either hate my body to love it. After years of trying to change my body for other people I finally looked in the mirror one day and said, "girl you're beautiful" and it's been a daily battle since then. Especially as a single woman... it seems impossible to find someone who appreciates my brain just as much as my boobs & my butt. And appreciates the fact that Saturday mornings are for PANCAKES not for YOGA in my world. #pancakes>errbody

  3. THIS. Oh my gosh. Thank you for this! I agree. I have always been a "medium" girl. Even at my fittest, its just how I'm built. Right now I am just outside that and working my way back after a crazy sick pregnancy and lots of drama haha Holla to the mediums :) I plan to post some fashion pics soon despite my mediumness.

  4. AMEN! AMEN! I've always been self-conscious of my body, and I think this is exactly the reason. There is no target for the "medium" girls. It's like we are just skipped over in society when it comes to fashion and body talk.

  5. Girl, YAS. ::shimmies in size 8 jeans that don't *really* fit::

  6. I love this! I'm a medium for sure (size 8-10). I totally relate to this sentiment. I often feel insecure around my smaller friends and constantly wanting to lose those 10 lbs. But I feel like I can't complain about those 10 lbs around my plus sized friends. I wouldn't classify myself as a fashion blogger per se but I do post alot about fashion!

  7. Sarah I love you! I am definitely in that size range, have curves in all the wrong places, and constantly feel out of place. Hang in there! I have yet to find a fashion blogger in our range too :( Maybe I need to start that! lol! On the bright side of things, there must be a lot of medium girls out there because those are sizes always gone when I do any sort of shopping :)

  8. YES. Also, do you ever wonder what it would be like to be the same size at every store? I feel like girls who are a "0" are that across the board, but in any given week I could be a 4, 6, 8, and 10. like, I don't even understand how that's possible. you know? online shopping gives me the most anxiety ever.

    1. This is SO true. If there are no free returns, you can bet I'm never ordering online because I need to order at least 2 sizes to ever find something that really fits.

    2. I feel the same way! Being a middle girl can give you a complex when you are on the border like this and can change a size just because I walked into a different store.

  9. Hey, hi, hello! I'm a size 8/10 semi-fashion blogger (when my camera is not broken), and you've just inspired me to do a post on bathing suit cover ups because I could not agree more that no suits really ever "flattering" my body shape. Shorts are the bane of my existence I swear. I have a smaller waist and much bigger booty/thighs and everything these days seems to be massively oversized or denim underwear trying to pass as real clothing. My favourite "jeans" are the AE High Rise Jeggings - they are seriously the most comfortable pants and come up higher so they help avoid the whole muffin top situation! They're the only jeans I wear now!

  10. Do you follow Franish? She's a 10 (I think) and I love her fashion. I'm (usually) a 14, but I don't look like the fashion bloggers I've found that are 14 because I'm 5'10" and they're usually short(er) so a 14 looks completely different on each of us. I totally have noticed the no middle ground, and it's weird. Fashion magazines, fashion blogs, etc etc. Get on the ball!

  11. I'm definitely a plus-size person and always have been, so I've never really thought about this before, but you're right! There are plus-size stores filled to the brim with adorable clothes that I covet and can't afford (hey there, Torrid). That, of course, doesn't mean that I feel confident in them - I never feel confident, which I think stems from the omnipresent fear that a group of teenage boys is lurking around every corner ready to make fun of me and ruin my day. But you're definitely right - there are options for plus-size and options for skinny girls and then there's everyone else, fending for themselves!

  12. Perfection! I'm a "medium" too that just so happens to also be very bottom heavy. I never know how to dress my body and there's not a lot of representation out there. I've thought of sharing fashion posts but no one LOOKS like me and felt embarrassed. This is really fantastic!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Love this. And so true! I too would like to know where I can get great ripped denim that isn't boyfriend style... if you find it, please share :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well you hit the nail with this one. I am one of the "medium" Nothing seems to ever work for us with clothes. We aren't represented and yes most of us are self conscious because we simply don't exist in the media world. I don't have a huge long reply to this as you hit every point! This is one of my favorite post ever!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I love this!! I was always super skinny growing up but when I hit 17, I gained weight but not in a "bigger girl" way, more like just adding some meat to my hips and thighs. So I'm a medium girl. Great post!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh my goodness! This is perfect! I totally agree and I just haven't been able to put it into words. There are plus-size women out there who are so confident so why am I not. I'm in the size 8-12 range as you described it and I HATE shopping for any clothes really. It's horrible. Especially when I'm a size 8 at one store and a size 12 at another. Or better yet, just two different clothing items in the same store! Ugh. And it's so true. There are skinny models and fashion bloggers and there are plus size models and fashion bloggers. And as much as I admire the plus-size ones and their confidence and I think they are being a great example for other women in that situation, I want some medium ones to help with MY confidence.

    ReplyDelete
  17. PREACH IT!!! you know I agree 100% with you on this. so well said.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm between a 12 & a 14 at the moment. So I'm really in the middle & I can totally understand this struggle! I know I'm not 'plus size' material, but I'm not skinny either. It's a hard place to be at!

    ReplyDelete
  19. YES YES YES!! This is so perfect. I honestly wonder this all the time. I'm so glad you took what so many of us are thinking and put it into words. I was thinner in high school and once I hit that size 8, I felt like I was in a completely different class where it was more difficult to buy clothes, partially because you completely fall off the companies radars!

I used to share more outfit pictures, but I still share fashion related posts if you'd like to read :)

  20. OMG YAAASSS. I was just having this conversation with a friend of mine, who considers herself plus sized, and I was like where are the girls like me in the pinterest fashion posts?! I'm an in-betweener as I like to call it. I range from a size 8-10 on any given day. And even though I have recently lost 10 pounds, I am still an 8-10. I will always be "curvy", "big booty-ed", "not a 0". I am so glad you said it too! There are other people like me!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Amen!! The medium girl struggle is so real! I'm loving going through the comments and finally finding these fashion bloggers because I really thought there were none. Thank you, Sarah!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ugh. Yes. I'm an extremely fit size 8 (hell, I run marathons) and I feel like a "fat" runner because all the other runners are the teeny tiny muscled people and that's just not my body type.

    ReplyDelete
  23. According to random studies that I have no idea who does, we're actually the majority, us in the 8-12 size range. My 'ideal weight' for my height is 120 lbs and a size small like Lauren Conrad. Screw that. I haven't been 120 since I was in junior high. Pretty sure my boobs are 15 lbs by themselves. Bring on the size mediums and larges! And the nachos, because life is too short to eat celery.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Ah, celery. One of those foods that is only tasty when slathered in peanut butter. But then, why not just eat the peanut butter with a spoon and straight from the jar instead like God intended?

  24. YES! I fall right into the 6-8 category, and then when you consider that I have wide hips and a small chest, I feel all alone in the fashion world! I look at so many fashion bloggers in their cute little tunic and leggings, and all I can think is. "That tunic sure wouldn't look like THAT on MY hips." It can do bad things for my self esteem!

I'm not at all uncomfortable with my body. I mean, there are days when I wish my legs were a little thinner or that I could actually fill out the top of some of my dresses, but overall, I like who I am. I just sometimes get so discouraged when I see others rocking things I could never wear in a million years! I'm not hating on them at all because I want them to do their thing, but I wish there was someone MY size too.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yep. I'm "medium" 8-10, and I basically agree. However, have you read Franish? http://franish.blogspot.com/ She does exactly this. She's in med school and has to dress professionally so more of her clothes are appropriate for work, but I love her blog! Bri is another good one (also more work based): http://www.workclothesisuppose.com/.

  26. I would LOVE for someone to lead me in the right direction of a pair of jeans that not only fits my hips and thighs but my short height and strange waist! Or a romper that my thighs dont swallow up but also doesnt come down to my knees...its seriously hard out here for us mediums 7 its sad that we dont have more "reps" like the other sizes do when in my opinion we need it the most!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I remember when one of my favorite stores had a model that had my exact measurements and it was the best, because I knew how everything she modeled would fit. Now, I feel like I've gotten a handle on what works best for my body so I can look at something and know it would work or any modifications I would need. I am a fashion blogger that just so happens to be a medium (or 6-8) so you can come visit me :)

  28. You probably think it gets better as you get older. You may think you will give yourself a break then. I'm Sarah's 65 year old mom, and I stress all the time about my appearance. It should be so unimportant at this time in my life. I hope she didn't inherit the stress from me.

  29. YASSS! So much YAS! I'm a medium and its so hard to find other bloggers who share clothes that are realistic for my body type! We should start a Pinterest board for all the mediums!

  30. YES!!! I am an 8-12 and would LOVE to find fashion bloggers in the medium realm. Because if I go with the skinny Pinterest ideal and wear a shirt, sweater, vest, scarf, and all the things, I look like the Michelin Man.

  32. You're getting all the snaps for this post. Like everyone else, I agree SO MUCH! I'm typically a 12. The "smallest" I've ever been was a 10; the largest, a 16. I'm always on the larger end of a the mediums. Large is too big in some tops, mediums are too snug. I can't win. Instead of focusing on the sizes, because we all know they're COMPLETELY unrealistic, I just buy what fits comfortably.

    Sharing this everywhere because AWESOME!

    ReplyDelete
  33. So true. I use to be tiny (and not just because I'm 4'10) But the last several years I have gained weight. I'm an 8-10 and finding clothes is torture. I just hate shopping for anything. I also hate the whole scarf look because I have big boobs it just makes me look like an oompa loompa.

  34. Preach it, girl!!! I am a MEDIUM!! I am 5'11" and wear 8-12 depending on brand and sizing. I am that annoying 'in-between' size. Birthdays come around and when I receive a gift, it is a toss-up if it will be in a large or medium and if it will fit me or not. When people ask what I size I wear, I immediately have follow-up questions for them. "Where are you purchasing said item?" "Top or bottom?" "Does the item run small, that you know of?" SO ANNOYING. I really feel that nothing is geared to mediums! And I feel alone in this all the time. Glad to know you are out there Sarah! Mediums UNITE! ;)

    1. As a side note: I am 175 lbs and not ashamed! I really wish there wasn't so much focus on body shapes, sizing, and weight, but it is the world we live in. You are gorgeous, and have an adorable shape, and look good in everything you wear, from what I can see!

Second side note: Went to dollar dog night last night here in Houston for the Astros/Rangers game. As a Dallas-raised girl, I have to tell you I represented well and the Rangers WON! Whoop! :)

  35. Such a good post! I think the important thing, really, though, is that almost every woman have issues with self confidence. We are constantly comparing ourselves to one another. While I may look at one girl and be totally envious of her perfect sized breasts (IMO), she may be looking at me and be jealous of the length of my legs. Why do we do this? The important thing is that we talk about it and make it a discussion to remind ourselves, so bravo for taking on this topic!

  38. I love this post it is so well thought out and written in a way that is honest yet unoffensive. I hate it when people make it seem like you have to be curvy or thin-it just isn't the case. I'm a size 2 (therefore not exactly your target audience for this post though I still appreciated it). I am not curvy and I am not waify thin. I have a very athletic body type and I find so many articles about "real women" stating that they should have curves and not be a size 0 or 2. These articles make me feel masculine because I don't look like Kate Upton or Marilyn Monroe! I immediately dismiss the authors of the articles as jealous haters along with songs like "All about that bass" (or whatever its called) because they feel the need to shame certain body types in order to elevate others. I think there is room to be beautiful at size 00 with no curves, a size 4 with curves, a size 6 with a booty, a size 10 with small boobs, a size 16 and everywhere in between. I also wish there was more representation of different body types in the fashion blogging world.

  40. I'd probably refer to myself as a medium/large 10/12 (depending on the brand and how many tacos I ate that day) and we are DEFINITELY not represented, but we stand strong!!! I'd post fashion if I had any fashion sense, believe me! However, I doubt anyone cares about the Old Navy vintage shirt I have in every color and the 2 statement necklaces to my name.

Now to scroll through the comments to find some new inspiration blogs...

  41. I have to admit, I am the odd person that is a 6-8 on the borderline of both worlds... so I truly fit in nowhere. All I want is to be one true size... I really don't care which, because I am healthy and fell good but it would be a nice bonus to be able to look good in either a small OR a medium. Instead I'm a sausage in one and swimming in the other.

  42. I love this. I'm exactly in the 8 - 12 range. And seriously where are our fashion bloggers? Also, today looking in the mirror at work at my 5'8" self in jeans, I've decided my memior will be called "Too Tall for Regular Sizes, Not Tall Enough for the Tall Sizes, and Way Too LAzy to Ever Go to a Tailor: the Life of Kimberly K."

  43. Check out my friend Miranda's fashion blog - www.shopandtwirl.com. She's getting married next month so her posting has been light lately, but she has promised to get back on it. I went to her shop my closet "sale" before she moved in which she gave everything away, her stuff fit me, and I am definitely in the range you're talking about, so I'm sure she is, too!

  44. You're absolutely right, the mediums are hiding. I know this because whenever I'm out shopping there are no mediums in stock. I love this post because it inspires me to love my medium body. just because I'm not skinny or plus size doesn't mean I/we can't be confident too. Cheers to the mediums!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. PREACH!!! I wear a 10-12 and seriously - where are the people?! The thing is, they are out there. Whenever I go to buy a shirt, the medium size is always the size out of stock. Same with pants. Never a 10 or a 12 in pants. So, the "medium" girls exist. They're wearing the clothes I want to wear. BUT WHERE ARE THEY? I love this post - thanks for writing it!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yup! I felt great when I was a bigger, "curvy" girl and awesome as a size four, oddly enough it was when I was in between that I felt the worst about myself. I never thought about it that there wasn't as many girls in the spotlight that are that size.

    ReplyDelete
  50. this is a super interested point! you're totally right. there is this weird middle size (marge...as you will) and it is sort of weird to be a part of. i'm in that range and i'm also a size 9 shoe and that means all the shoes that size ever on clearance are always gone first. now i'm sale-shoeless and have no fashion bloggers to help either. good call on calling this out!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I too am a medium size! I have the same problem when reading blogs. I'm not tiny and my boobs are too big for those cute boho or drapy tees! It makes me look twice the size!! I have found that the best style for me is slightly fitted. Short? I've got you covered. After NOT wearing them because I was s of concious for years, I have found the old navy 3.5 in length boyfriend style to be the best. Mind you, I buy them in a smaller size so they FIT and aren't baggy. I also found. That at least partially tucked shirts look better because it keeps it looking more fitted rather than like I'm pregnant due to my chest making the shirt flare out. When I hit my 30s, I said screw it! If they don't like it, DONT look! Sometimes it's easier said than done as I live in Bloomington IN and it's a college town. Tons of tiny little stick girls around to make you feel great about yourself ;)

  52. Considering how I bounce between the 6 to 10 size range depending on how well I'm working out/eating or how cheap/expensive of a brand I'm wearing, I'm over here alternating between "YES YES YES!" and "AMEN!" while reading this post! And while I have that curvy booty, I have this belly and thighs I'd like to have an invisibility cloak for cause some of the things fashion bloggers show aren't going to work on this body. And I wish the daggum peplum trend would die. That is not flattering unless you're flat stomached and a toddler ;)

  61. I personally think that the medium-sized body is typically the best looking. I think it looks healthy and beautiful. I gained a lot of weight in college- we're talking 100 pounds- and when I think of getting back in shape, I never think of wanting to be a size 2....no, I look more towards the 6-8 range.

  63. I recently left the "medium" size, but I will be back there soon. Hello Fitbit. I have been a medium almost my entire life and I definitely agree with you. 66. Bravo. I am a medium all day everyday! When I say things like "I need to lose about 6 pounds" people aren't sure how to take it but I learned long ago that being a medium is all about the happy medium. Right now I'm getting back to being a more fit medium but that doesn't change my jean size... All it changes is bing more of a 7/8 or an 8/9. It's not even a real pant size difference but mediums (at least the ones I know) feel this weird pressure to be smaller because to some people it seems like we're just a bit bigger than we could be. No. We're just mediums and we are awesome. On another note, I feel the bikini struggle hard

  68. Thank you for this! Yes! I'm a size 6-8, it varies. But a 6 on me might look like a 10 on someone else. It could seem like a 2 to someone else. It's less about the number and more about each and every individual body.

  69. OMG. I'm a medium girl? I've been thinking all this time that I was "bigger" or "curvy," and while I am bigger than some girls and definitely have curves, I think I like the medium label better. It seems more accurate. I'm a size 10-12 at the moment and I agree it feels like there are not fashionistas in my size.

  70. YAAAAAAAAAAS! #TeamMedium4Lyfe I'm smack bang in the middle of "average" town and don't tell me we're not the "norm" because all the clothes that I want to buy online in a medium/size 12 are always the first ones to go. Love this!

  72. I think http://www.walkinginmemphisinhighheels.com/ and www.aubreykinch.com are both medium sized individuals that have great style! You might already follow them both but they definitely have great options when it comes to fashion that's not plus sized or teenytiny.

  74. This is such a great post! I'm a "medium" (have always fluctuated from sizes 6-10) and it's taken me quite some time to really feel good in my skin, but I don't feel the need to hide anymore. Sure, I don't fit the model-thin or plus-size mold, but I'm strong. I've carried two babies in my body and nursed them, ran races, lifted heavy weights, and done all sorts of other fun things with my body.

It's not easy finding inspiration for clothes but I find that when I wear things that are more form-fitting, I feel and look better. Since I'm hourglass shaped, I usually try to accentuate my waist, so instead of boxy t-shirts, for example, I wear shirts that nip in at the waist. Sure, that makes my soft stomach a little more obvious, but I still think I look better than if I were wearing a big baggy shirt! I like jeans that come up a little higher in the waist, like mid-rise, since they show off my hourglass shape better without giving me any muffin-top! I haven't worn shorts in years but I do love dresses and think a-lines are always flattering.

Anyway, great post :D You're beautiful!!!!
