A Bone to Pick...

The title of this blog post... you may be be wondering where I'm going with this...

Am I going to talk about the bone I have to pick with the Casper the Friendly Ghost Defensive Special Team unit for the Tennessee Vols (you can run right through them!)?

No.

Am I going to talk about the bone I have to pick with the Cowboys defense that lost its two best players last night, then everyone else just said F-it, and decided to take an early vacation for the bye week?

No.

Am I going to talk about the Cowboys offense, how much I despise Dez Bryant and seeing Derek Dooley's weather man face on the Cowboy's sidelines?

No.

Am I going to talk about Ray Rice sucking butt hole or how I left Darren Sproles on my bench in two different leagues and all Whitney needs is 13 points from two players tonight to beat me and push me back to last place in the league?

No.

I have a bone to pick with The Carrie Diaries.

You see, there are two shows in the history of the world that I could tell you every single detail about. I've seen every episode no less than 15 times. Those two shows are Saved by the Bell and Sex and the City. I own the entire box set, and I fall asleep every night watching Sex and the City episodes. I feel as if I learn something new each time I re-watch. Judge if you will, I don't currr.

So this weekend, I was sick of watching losers on my t.v. (all my football teams) so I decided to peruse the Netflix offerings.  There sat The Carrie Diaries as a recommended watch. I figured, "Hey, why not!"

Before I get into that, let's take a walk down SATC memory lane.

The year is 2002. In the previous episode, Carrie had recently broken off her engagement with Aiden and is now freelancing at Vogue for some extra cash money to buy more Manolos buy her apartment since it was going co-op.

In her first couple of days at Vogue, Carrie writes an article which Enid, played by Candice Bergen, rips apart claiming it is not "Vogue." Carrie goes to her mentor, so-to-speak, Julian and tells him she wants to quit.

Julian then says, "What would your father have to say about you quitting?"

Carrie replies, "He wouldn't have much to say, he quit my mother and me when I was little."

BAM!
RIGHT THERE.

Now, back to episode one of the Carrie Diaries.

We meet Carrie Bradshaw, a 16 year old girl living in Connecticut dreaming of days in NYC. Her mother has just died of cancer and she is being raised by none other than her loving, caring, always-been-there-for-her-her-entire-life FATHER

So there you have it. The entire show is a fraud from act one scene one.

Don't even get me started regarding the episode with David Duchovny, Boy-Interrupted. Where David Duchovny plays Jeremy, Carrie's high school sweetheart whom she dumps....... yeah. Jeremy is no where to be found in the Carrie Diaries. WHERE THE HECK IS JEREMY, CW?! This is BS.

The fact that the show is actually pretty cute and I continued to watch three full episodes is neither here nor there. I'm outraged.

  1. so i was thinking of watching this the other day on my netflix but i might not because i don't like when anything strays away from the original story line. YOU CAN'T DO THAT. NO. im mad too and I haven't even watched it.

  2. I've actually been hesitant to watch the carrie diaries for this exact reason.

  3. I knew there was a book but I didn't know about a show! Interesting and upsetting at the same time. I don't think it could ever compare to the original, even if they got the details right.

  4. I've never watched either show, but a lack of continuity is one of my HUGE TV pet peeves. Pretty sure I'd be throwing things if I watched SATC and the Carrie Diaries, so I feel for you in a big way.

  5. I've never watched for that reason! I hate watching movies/TV shows when the whole time the only thing I can think is THAT ISN'T HOW IT'S SUPPOSED TO GO!

  6. I go back and forth with the Carrie Diaries. I've been told that it's based more on the book(s) vs. the TV show.... and I haven't read the books. So I have no idea how accurate they are to that. But like you - I LOVE LOVE LOVE the TV show Sex and the City. So the differences drive me nuts. Then at the same time... it is pretty cute.

  7. SARAH we're the same person.. I'm obsessed with SATC, like OBSESSED and it really bugs me that the story lines do not completely line up!

  8. You know, I watch The Carrie Diaries and this bothers me too. The reason that it bothers me the most, though, is that Candace Bushnell is the one who wrote both books...

  9. I'm the same way with Full House. I can pretty much quote every line because I've seen them a 100 times each. If they made some sort of continuity error in a spin-off series...it would be dead to me. Ha, that sounded ridiculous. I wouldn't be able to watch it and enjoy it...there.

  10. And this is why I've never watched one single episode.

  11. If they were going to make a show based off of Carrie's life, they should make it actually based off of her life. I've never watched this show because I thought it would just ruin SATC and now I'm very glad I've never watched it!

  12. How did I not realize this before?! Ugh! I only watched like 3 episodes of The Carrie Diaries anyway.

    1. Oh and BTW I do not mind the show per say and like that it takes place in the 80s but the lead really looks nothing like SJP. It just to much of a stretch. But I still watch it.

  14. i would go back to picking bones with your teams. they SUCKED this weekend ;) In fact as I was watching the Dallas game and the Tennessee game this weekend, I thought to myself, I wonder how sad Sarah is... I am a good blogger friend like that

  15. Go get em tiger.....I believe we watched the ENTIRE season at least three times all the way through in college....miss those days!!! xo

  16. You can tell you're a true fan when you catch errors in consistency that the writers apparently decided to gloss over! As a kid I watched Gilligan's Island enough till I could catch all of their discrepancies in description and back story of the characters. They were really sloppy, so it was easy, but I still loved the show!

  17. Nothing can ever trump SATC, because it is the best show of all time. The Sopranos is a close second but Carrie Bradshaw is my go-to for everything!

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1. I can't with that show.

    2. See ya tonight... I'll be giving you the business.

  19. I yelled at the TV every episode last year for these reasons. Since when did she have an awesome white bread dad? Where the hell was Carrie's badass little sister in all of SATC???? She couldn't come visit? Not once? Char's brother did. We know about Miranda's family! Drove me nuts. And yet I watched every episode. I liked the show but had to remove all SATC from my mind. Which just left me as a 29 year old watching a teenaged drama for no reason. But I don’t care…much.

  20. i too was way way disappointed in the show!!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yep, just that right there makes me never want to see the show. Why is it so hard for producers to actually PAY ATTENTION and WATCH previous SATC episodes to get at least something right??

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hahahaha I love that your wrote this. I can basically get sucked into every show that's on the CW and I've been watching The Carrie Diaries since it started.. the current season is playing on Friday nights so something tells me it won't be around much longer. I will tell you this.. the show follows the plot of The Carrie Diaries book that Candice whatever her name is wrote so I think maybe they didn't follow her book in Sex and the City? Who knows.

  23. I too have a love for sex and the city marathons! And I too saw that the Carrie diaries was a recommended option on Netflix, I know now to not waste my time!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I adamantly refuse to watch this show. Accurate or not. Call me a snob but I just can't.

    ReplyDelete
  25. THANK YOU! I am so happy I am not the only one who has noticed these things!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. THANK YOU! I had the exact same thought when I watched the Carrie Diaries, I just couldn't remember how I knew she had a bad relationship with her pops. Great detective work!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Eww I can only picture Julian in his little man briefs trying to hit on Carrie.

    ReplyDelete
  28. So I've never seen the Carrie diaries, but that detail would drive me crazy too! When it comes to details from SATC, I'm like the star trek geek who will jump down your throat in a second about an inaccuracy. The people behind The Carrie Diaries need to do their homework!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I really like The Carrie Diaries, but I noticed the exact same thing, it does not add up with SATC at all. I don't understand why they did this!

  30. I noticed the EXACT SAME THING when i watched the pilot. Which is why I've never watched another episode.

  31. this is how i feel about the golden girls. dorothy got "knocked up" when she was 17, yet in the show her kids come to visit and they're in mid-20s / exactly 30 years old. and she's at least late 50s/60. it enrages me!! but ive seen every episode of the golden girls at least 20 times.

side note: they always do themed-trivia nights in NYC (i went to a golden girls and game of thrones one) and they do SATC all the time...i think you should just plan a trip to NYC so you're there when there's a SATC one, and win it. they do saved by the bell ones too.

    ReplyDelete
  32. yeah, it bugs me because the show's based on the books... which don't correlate to SATC at all, even though they're written by the same person?! how does this make sense?

fun fact - annasophia robb who plays the young carrie was accepted to Stanford when I was a freshman. We have this thing called Admit Weekend where all the admits come in April for two days and check out the school and stay with the students and everything. And she stayed in my freshman dorm, which is really small and close-knit. I was in China that weekend for an emergency, but she hung out with all of my best friends and they say that she's seriously the sweetest, chillest girl (and really smart too). They had impromptu dance parties and shared pretzel M&Ms and gahhhh to this day, I so hate that I wasn't there. I think she did end up wanting to come to Stanford also, but decided to defer for a year or two so she could do Carrie Diaries first. Hoping she comes back before I graduate though & get to meet her for realsies!

  33. I am a faithful SATC watcher as well, and I thought about checking out Carrie Diaries, but I was already unimpressed because it's supposed to be set in the 80's and homegirl looks like she walked straight out of Vogue 2005.

Now I DEFINITELY don't want to check it out if it isn't even relatively true to the original...

    ReplyDelete
  34. You're hilarious. But I agree. I hate when they change things like that. I also fall asleep watching my favorite shows... it varies though. Right now I'm on a One Tree Hill kick! hahah

  35. First, lol at your Cowboys... Go Eagles <3 --- Where were you last year when I was screaming in rage at the fact that they gave her a loving father?? Yet, I still continue to watch every episode out of pure curiosity or because I have a secret love affair with young adult tv series. Glad I'm not the only one who has rewatched SATC a kagillion times!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh girlfriend--my Netflix keeps recommending this to me and I keep ignoring it for this exact reason. I mean, don't the people who came up with this show go home to their parents' house nearly every single day for lunch and watch 2 episodes of SATC on E!? (If I can they can) I mean, at least watch the box set yo! If you want real fans to watch this show, don't treat us like we are idiots, umkay? Ok, off the soap box.
PS I was cheering for TN this weekend, and that happens maybe like never.

    ReplyDelete
  37. HAHAHA seriously, I have been boycotting that show because that little twerp that is supposed to be Carrie Bradshaw just annoys me. And now I hear this bull?! NOT OKAY.

    ReplyDelete
  38. YES I felt exactly the same about this show! SO many inconsistencies with no reason as to why!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. It always bothers me when story lines don't match up. I mean, how hard is it to do your research? It's a cute show, but the inconsistencies with Sex and the City are a big turn-off.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't think I'd be able to watch the Carrie Diaries. It just doesn't seem right. I enjoyed the original too much. (maybe not as much as you.. but don't worry; no judgement....) I think it would be tough to watch something that is trying SO HARD to be the original. It never will be!!
"Do I do dope..... Nope." What episode is that one from Sarah ya ol' pro..........?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I don't watch the CD but I did read the book and was super confused because I had watched every episode of SATC also. So frustrating when an author doesn't remember what she writes..or maybe its because the producers took too many liberties with the show? IDK, but either way, lame that it doesn't correlate.

PS...I was off work today and I may or may not have watched several episodes of BOTH SATC and Saved by the Bell! ;-)

  42. Well. That's pretty annoying! I hate when that happens in movies, tv, or books.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I just watched this show over the weekend too and I PROMISE you I thought the exact same thing! It doesnt stick to the original story line at all..and as a die hard Sex & The City fan it annoyed the crap out of me lol

    ReplyDelete
  44. Okay 1) You and I are on the same wave length because I also started the Carrie Diaries this weekend. I'm ashamed of it, but glad I'm not alone. 2) Maybe she was lying to hide the pain? People with dead parents make up that they left all the time, and vice versa, because for some reason they think it's easier. I have no idea. I think I just made that up. 3) She's only 15 in the Carrie Diaries, she has three more years for Jeremy so step away from the ledge.

  45. Because of my love for SATC, I couldn't bring myself to watch The Carrie Diaries. I just couldn't!

    ReplyDelete
  46. THANK YOU! I watched the pilot episode when it premiered last year and realized that right away!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I've seen commercials for The Carrie Diaries when I'm watching other CW shows but I've never watched it myself. And now I'm not so sure I want to. I mean the whole show is based on a lie!

And don't shoot me but I have never seen one episode of SATC. The horror I know. Some day I will...if I ever get Netflix.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I have never seen it and I am pretty sure I will never. Nothing can beet the original SATC!

  51. I love Sex and the City too. I have the full box set and my husband makes fun of me for how much I watch it over and over. Such haters. I watched an episode of The Carrie Diaries and I thought it was ok, but never got into it. I read the Carrie Diaries book and was more happy with that.

  52. A few weekends ago I tried to watch the same show on Netflix, and I couldn't make it past the first episode- it was too different!
I did read somewhere that it was more in keeping with changes that had been made to the books, but whatever! I'd rather they stayed true to the show!

  53. Ok so I just binge watched the Carrie Diaries and now I had to come back and comment. It's an adorable show BUT I do not at all like this dad thing!! I always felt like the things she wrote about, the men she dated, etc stemmed from YEARS of deep seated daddy issues. So WTF, cw. wtf.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I never caught that but thanks for pointing that out! Unlike most of your commenters, I am still going to watch The Carrie Diaries. I'm hooked and although it may not match I still eat it up. Sue me :)

  55. omg thank you for pointing this out. I actually watched a few episodes of the carrie diaries but now i dont know if i can continue.. or maybe i will, because there is nothing else on at the moment!
