My Luck Has Run Out (If I Had Any To Begin With)

because every blog post should include a photograph....

My luck has run out. While standing at a Starbucks -- wait, let me back up -- let me clairfy by telling you that I made a completely unnecessary stop at the ole Starbs. I didn't really need coffee, I wasn't tired, I just had a craving for it. I was running late on top of it, so I honestly had no business being there. I pull up and the drive through line is out of control busy. I knew I couldn't wait in that line, so I backed into a parking spot and walked in. This may sound mesmerizingly lazy to you guys, but I rarely actually GO IN a Starbucks. That takes too much effort.

But this time I went in. I went in even though I was running late and honestly didn't even need any coffee. I was that desperate (in my eyes, parking and walking in somewhere that has a drive through is considered desperation and completely unnecessary) for something I didn't even need. I ordered a venti iced coffee, used the free voucher I had available on my card, and walked over to the waiting area for them to call my order.

While standing in said designated coffee waiting location, I transferred my keys from one hand to the other. Doing so, I lost control of my phone and watched it fall in slow motion to the ground. I tried to catch it out of the air about 3 separate times, all with no luck. I bent down to pick up the phone and it had shattered. To those looking on around me, I tried to act like it had been shattered for years and years and years. "Oh, whew! No further damage. Just these gigantic cracks that were already there. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH," I casually joked to the lady standing next to me.

Inside I was dying. As I proceeded to scroll instagram while waiting for my coffee, shards of glass impaled my thumb. I acted totally calm, cool and collected. Inside my heart felt like the screen of my phone, shattered into a million pieces.

I understand and completely realize this is a major first world problem I'm complaining about, dropping my iPhone waiting for iced freaking coffee from Starbucks. Next I'm going to tell you my Ferrari got a flat tire while I was driving to pickup my new, custom Rolex they told me would be ready that day but wasn't and I wasted an entire 45 minutes roundtrip.

Hold on, did I even follow up on last Friday's post about my broken iPhone? Oh right, I haven't even had time to follow up about that LAST broken iPhone! Sorry about that, how rude of me. Well, last Friday the apple store took one look at my phone and was like, "Yikes!" They simply handed me a new one, free of charge and I went skipping out of the store with glee.

Then I dropped it at a completely unnecessary stop at Starbucks less than a week later. Hooray! I now have washi tape covering the worst parts so that shards of glass won't embed themselves while I scroll the gram. In my 29 years on this planet I've never worn protection. So I guess I'll spend some time today looking for a more protective iPhone case. If you have any suggestions for protective cases that don't feel like I'm holding a large cement block in my hand, please let me know.

So naturally this weekend I'm taking my total and complete lack of luck with me to the casinos in Shreveport, Louisiana. I mean, makes total sense right? Where's the very best place for me to go throw wads of money away when I've just destroyed two iPhones in one week? DUH, A CASINO! Nice!

In the exact words of my friend who was born and raised in New Orleans, "Shreveport!?!? Why are you going to that shithole?" Super. Should be fun.

Follow us in the shithole of Shreveport, LA this weekend via Snapchat: @iamsarahwebb! You can find me at one of the slots that has an obnoxious Wheel of Fortune bonus game attached to it, hopefully drinking for free.

  1. Oh my god, no way! That really is bad luck.... Honestly, I drop my phone constantly. I swear, sometimes it literally hops out of my hand on its own! I got an Otter Box case when I first got my phone and dropped it a zillion times and in 4 years, it has never cracked. *knock on wood* It's not a HUGE case, but it's not small either. You get used to it so quickly that you don't notice it anyone and even feeling weird without it...
Plus the case is guaranteed for life. If it breaks, you just send a picture to their customer service and they'll send you a new one within a couple of business days! It's like magic!

  2. It might be a first world problem, but it's definitely a hard blow. I can't believe I've never cracked a screen on any of the iPhones I've owned.. and I drop mine at least once a day. Protection is a must! At least you you have an excuse to go shopping?

  3. Both my parents are from Shreveport Sarah. And yes, it is kinda a shit hole. But it's got it's charm! I'm SOOOOOO sorry about your phone. You'll win the month back!

  4. As I was reading this I thought... OH NOOOO SHE JUST GOT A NEW PHONNNNEEEE!

  5. So I drop my phone about once a day, and I have no idea what it's called off the top of my head, but some screen protector they told me I HAD to have at Verizon. And it's worked! It was like $40, but every time I drop my phone the screen protector cracks a little bit, and it's getting a little bit spider-weby because I seriously drop it so much, but it works!

    1. I think I have something similar, I got a glass screen cover and it works so well! I don't have a super protective case, just the glass protector.

  6. I cracked my phone a few months ago..WAITING FOR AN ICED COFFEE AT STARBUCKS, you are not alone my friend. When I got it fixed, they put a protective glass over the screen for about $20. I'd recommend it for further protection for us clumsy folks :)

    1. Stop it.... I think we need to tweet at Starbucks or something and ask for lost damages. (or at the very least another free iced coffee)

  7. The worst!! I hate when the screen breaks enough for little shards of glass to make their way into your skin. Love that picture though - the mousepad is so cute!

  8. Oh no! That totally sucks. I busted my screen and my husband gave me such a hard time about not taking care of my phone and the next day he dropped his and shattered his screen. The best part of this whole story is this one-liner "In my 29 years on this planet I've never worn protection." ;)

  9. Tech21 cases are awesome (I've dropped my phone way too many times and no cracks!) and aren't ridiculously huge - definitely recommend!

  10. OR...you DO have luck because, really, what are the odds that you would break two phones in a week?? Either way, have a great time!

  11. That stinks! I use Lifebox from Amazon...it's like $12 or so and has survived a few drops.

  12. Noooooooo. I dont care if it's a first world problem, any problem that costs me at least 700 dollars is worth crying about. At least you were cool about it, save your breakdown for the car while you try to not cut your fingers as you furiously text the one friend who will sympathize with you :(

  13. I swear by Speck cases because I hate the blocky protective cases that are hard to take off and the thinner cases from other brands are flimsy and not protective. Speck give you slim and protects at the same time, plus their cases are pretty rad and unique to boot. That, and the $20 protective clear screen cover from the store and multiple drops later - no cracks or shattering. Best of luck to you on your first world problem! Also a word of advice - stop doing the phone juggle!! Especially with the damn keys. Always a disaster waiting to happen, lol.

  14. OMG I am dying laughing. One of my close friends lives one town away from shreveport. When I saw your snapchat story I was like "oh that's funny this blogger I follow is in shreveport right now! shes at the casino!" (my friend goes to the casinos there a lot). My friend regularly calls it Shitport or Shrevenasty. So your ending footnote made me laugh out loud. I had to tell her haha

  16. Shattering my iPhone is up near the top of my worst fears list. That totally sucks!

  17. Lifeproof.. waterproof and less bulky than most otterboxes! also have a lifetime guarantee. survived some kid throwing it off the boat while tubing and I found it deep in the water 2 hours later STILL WORKED.

  18. My phone has done that thing where the screen just shuts off. I had to get a new phone too!!! But they had to mail it to me and so I had no phone so two days!!! I hope by now you have gotten your luck back!

  19. I realize that I'm way late to the game here and you likely have already gotten past this situation, but I thought I would tell you pieces of my story. I dropped my phone and shattered the screen on Black Friday. The WORST day in the history of EVER to break your screen. Anyway, so in the interim before I could get to the Apple store, I put my phone in a ziploc bag. It helps to keep you from impaling your finger, and the fingerprint thingy on the home button still works.

Then when I got a new phone, I got the equivalent to this case: http://www.apple.com/shop/product/HGMT2ZM/B/tech21-evo-mesh-sport-case-for-iphone-6-and-iphone-6s-smoke?fnode=99

My screen shattered because it hit the ground on the corner of the phone, and this case has some good padding on the edges, so it should keep my issue from happening again. It's got good protection but isn't huge-normous.
