This Bowl is Gonna Be Cold

"Cold Super Bowl Hair Don't Care"-- Roger Goodell

Goodell, the NFL commissioner, is one of the biggest reasons Super Bowl XLVIII will be the first ever outdoor cold city Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is one of the few sporting events where the winner is not crowned after a series of games, making this single game hold an incredible amount of pressure for both sides of the field.

You all may have heard of Richard Sherman by now? He is that quiet, shy fellow Erin Andrews had the pleasure of interviewing after Seattle played the 49ers...

So I actually like the kid, very much. He is loud, he is outspoken, he is opinionated... but guess what he isn't? DUMB. This young man went to Stanford, he is smart, he knows what he is doing and he's making a character and a name for himself. Grabbing the super star spotlight is something that is difficult for defenders to do.

And I gotta admit, Sherman's opinion on the cold weather Super Bowl is spot on if you ask me, "It's the league's responsibility to show its audience the best possible product, and this can't happen in the snow."

While I have no problem with cold weather during the playoffs or during the regular season, I do have a problem with it in the Super Bowl. This is the one chance each team gets to prove they are THE BEST. The one chance a year they get to entertain America. No one is the best in three feet of snow. We found that out when Philly played Detroit this year...

With all of this being said, even Goodell doesn't want the game to be played in snow. There is snow in the New Jersey forecast, and a contingency plan is in place to possibly move the game to Saturday night. We would know 36 hours prior to game time if this is going to happen. So keep that in mind if you are planning a Super Bowl party, watch that forecast. This cold weather Super Bowl will effect you too!

So what are your thoughts on the first cold weather Super Bowl? Yay or Nay?

  1. Interestingly, the cold and the high profile of Sherman (from the #1 defense) make two impressive hurdles for Manning - and thus if Denver wins, Manning's legacy will explode! One of the guys on ESPN's First Take even said that if Manning can overcome both the cold and great defense, he would consider Peyton for the spot of best QB ever - and certainly in the top three of all time! Hyperbole? Maybe, but this game, in just a few days, has gone from "just" another Super Bowl to the (possible) defining moment of PM's career:

  2. I'm actually excited to see the game in the cold. Only because it's probably going to be sloppy, which will make things much more interesting. Both teams are used to playing in strange weather, but nothing quite like this. Cold and snow always make for some strange decisions. And maybe a little less Richard Sherman, which is good for my Broncos! Except then Peyton can't throw. I'm contradicting myself. I'm done.

  3. Considering that the playoff game between the 49er's and the Packers was almost as cold as the infamous Ice Bowl, I still get a bit of a rush from seeing players try and deal with weather conditions. I guess everyone's else frustration bugs me a bit though, since if it's snowing/raining/what have you, every member of the team who loses will probs blame it on the weather. And that's just lame.

  4. i want snowy chaos for this game!

  5. I am by no means invested in the Super Bowl, but I feel like at face value, choosing a snowy venue seems pretttty stupid if you ask me. I was listening to a local sports talk radio show last week and one of the hosts was just like, I want there to be a blizzard, I want it to snow so hard so that the people who made this decision to have the Superbowl in the snow realize what a stupid decision it was!!! Hahaha

  6. Being from Detroit I have seen many a game in the snow and if there is a lot of it the two best teams in the country will end up looking like a bunch of 8 year olds playing rec ball. Which would be funny but I want to see top notch performance!!! And they should move it to Saturday permanently! I hate having to go to work the next day. Imagine how much bigger the parties would be if it were on Sat.!!! Who wants to suffer thru a beer, hot wing, nacho hangover at work!!!

  7. Oh man, didn't know that could happen - but it's good to know now. Thanks, girl.

  8. I still can't believe they chose an outdoor cold arena. I'm sure they didn't see this "polar vortex" stuff coming but they still had to know that snow or adverse weather was a possibility. I like what one person said (can't remember who) that beyond their responsibility to provide an arena for a stellar game, they owed it to the fans to give them a chance to go to the game and have a great time. That of course extends to the fans at home who may be forced to watch a grueling match in the snow. Nobody wants to see a Super Bowl where the weather has the chance to be a factor in who wins.

If the weather does end up having an affect on the team's abilities to play the game, we will never hear the end of it. They'll go on and on for years about what could have happened. The possibility of having to listen to that talk for years is enough to wish they weren't holding it in NJ this year.

  9. I kind of love that the Superbowl is going to be here! Football should be played in all types of weather. Plus, it's been super exciting to have all the Superbowl fun in town, so maybe I am a little biased.

  10. I understand both sides. While I love watching the games that are rough and you never know what is going to happen, I get that it shouldn't impact something that has huge implications.
I love Richard Sherman too, he is no dummy and he is not going to be on a shining white horse with Peyton in the game. I really want the Broncos to win, I have a crush on Peyton. I think it is going to be a great game. I am just sad it is the last football game of the season!

  11. I think my boys THE SEAHAWKS are ready for the cold. And Richard Sherman for the win!! Might be a shit talker but at least he can back it up with what he's able to do on the field :)

    GO HAWKS!! #12

  12. Honestly I would prefer the Super Bowl on Saturday - no going to work the next day! But I do agree that having it in a cold weather city is sort of stupid. My team is the Pats and I've certainly seen my share of exciting snow games, but the Super Bowl is on a litte different level than a regular season game

  13. It fun to watch the player play in cold weather but you won't find me at the game. The Detroit lions and Phi was a fun/ crazy game to watch.

  14. I swear I remember seeing a Super Bowl played with snow on the ground before. I kind of liked it because it added an extra element of suspense to the game.

But yeah, the Super Bowl party might have to be moved. That would be a bummer. Why would they pick a northern stadium that doesn't have a dome? Dumb, dumb, dumb.

  15. I'm from NJ & I think it's crazy that they are holding the Super Bowl here! It needs to be somewhere warm & where there is no chance of snow!

  16. This sounds like a terrible, possibly entertaining, idea.

  17. Goodell is a moron. Moving the super bowl to a Saturday would cause the biggest uproar yet. It was already a dumb move having it in NY but to move it right before the game? Ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think it's going to be a mess. If there's a possibility of it having to be moved, it probably shouldn't be where it is.

    ReplyDelete
  19. To me, football is football and it should be played outside. I love that they are mixing it up this year and having it somewhere cold!! But hey, I'm the girl that thinks domes for football stadiums are ridiculous too! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  20. I wish it wasn't in Jersey try living near the stadium. My town already has way to many crazy people here. Then they are calling for snow on top of that! Its insane. I refuse to leave my street. I do not want to get killed by all the crazy's. I don't even know why its going to be here just a bad decision. If you have ever been to our stadium and to the surrounding area you would be like why is it here?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I have to completely disagree with you here! I think they should play that game in the snow, one of the great things about football in my opinion is it doesn't let the weather get in the way. Some of the most interesting and exciting games have been played in bad weather. Without the weather there would have been no "Fog Bowl" in 1988 which I happily remember watching!

While it's nice to play in sunny warm weather or a dome to me the unknown element of the weather is just part of what football is all about.

PS I like Sherman too! He's super smart and a great player, so what if he trashed talked during an interview with Erin. Doesn't make him less of anything in my eyes, it was the heat of the moment baby and he was in it!

Sorry for what feels like the longest comment ever!

  22. Obviously I love it because that means it finally came to ME!

  23. Woooaahhhh... I can't belive they played in so much snow!!! As I have said before, I'm not exactly down with the whole American Football but I hope you have fun... and wrap up warm!!
    M xx

  24. I honestly hope the biggest blizzard ever brews up for this game.. maybe that'll finally put Goodell in his place!

    ReplyDelete
  25. i agree completely with what he said. sounds like I would like him too.

    ReplyDelete
  26. If a cold weather game means the potential for a Saturday Super Bowl, I am 100% down for that. I never understood why it wasn't on Saturday in the first place. It's just rude being on Sunday night.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Shoot, ain't nobody got time to cancel work and find a replacement with only 36 hours notice--at least not in my job. So for my sake, I hope it stays on Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The Superbowl is not the place to be testing your ability to play in the snow. Not a great idea. Some teams are used to it being where the team is from, but it does make a good game too.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I hope the game stays on Sunday. I would love to have the next day off, but moving it is dumb. Everyone knows that Sunday is the big game, people take time off work way in advance and Goodell was stupid to have it in NJ in the first place. As for Sherman, he is very smart, but he also has a mouth on him. I have never been a big fan of the mouthy players (T.O. was a Niner and he still pissed me off with his mouth). As for who I want to win....the Broncos. I am still pissed off at the Seahawks for beating the Niners and I can't stand Carroll. Plus Peyton Manning is a classy guy, a phenominal player and needs this Super Bowl win!

  30. No way no how will I be in that stadium. That is too much cold for that extended period of time. Ill enjoy it from my warm Florida couch:)

  31. Yippee, I have a sports related opinion. Being from the frigid Midwest and currently residing in the northeast and home of the Superbowl this year, I respectly disagree. I think that the fans in the North deserve to be a part of the Superbowl action just as much as the fans in the warmer climates, even if we play in outdoor stadiums. We spend just as much money and freeze our asses off to cheer on our favorite football teams, so we deserve to have all the fun that comes with the Superbowl in our backyard. If the league is really concerned about the cold/snow, they shouldn't end the season in January. K? Love you. Go Vikings… whoops.

  32. I saw a follow up interview of Sherman and he really is well-spoken! Too bad the bad gets replayed over and over and over again!

  33. A) Not a fan of a cold Super Bowl. Not a fan of cold in general! B) I didn't know about a potential Saturday game! Hmmm. That kind of sucks for everyone. I'd totally propose for all Super Bowls to be held in San Diego every year so there is no threat of cold weather...but our stadium kind of sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  34. A Saturday Superbowl!? I wouldn't know what to do with myself on Sunday...!

    ReplyDelete
  35. A Saturday Superbowl just sounds like a sin, I really hope that doesn't happen, not only will it ruin my superbowl plans (I was going to be grocery shopping and prepping on Saturday), but it will just feel so strange...

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh I am so pumped for a Cold Bowl. Rooting for my Lions is (usually) disappointing but snow games are my favorite. Lots of snow or lots of mud, those are my absolute favorite games to watch. I mean, if it's going to endanger the players, then yeah, don't do it, but a little snow and some temps in the high 20's aren't going to kill anyone. So much more fun!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm going to go with nay on a cold Super Bowl. Let's be real here, we want to see football not a snowball fight. I think it would be interesting if the games changes to Saturday evening - GAME CHANGER!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Nay. Why risk it? Super Bowl SUNDAY. make it so the players and spectators and performers are comfortable. Fingers crossed for decent weather!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love how smart Richard Sherman is. That to me is a really good motivator for people to do well both academically and athletically. I agree with Sherman. A cold Super Bowl won't be a good one....GO DENVER!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I hope and pray for no snow because if the game is Saturday night... I won't be able to watch it!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I had no idea that Saturday was in the talks! Wahooooo. Thanks for keeping us gals in the loop on all things unimportant (ha!). Really though, we are planning to host a bunch of people from the university's athletic department, so it's good to be warned about this possible change. Goodness knows if there's one group of hard core sports fanatics, it's going to be these guys!

    ReplyDelete
  42. We're going to agree to disagree, or somethign like that. I think it's absolute BS that the Bowl is ALWAYS held in a warm weather/indoor stadium. How is that fair? Not to mention that teams play in worse weather at Lambeau. A little snow compared to -20 degrees is nothing. It's possible I'm also biased since the stadium is 20 mins from me. Really though, I think these weather nay-sayers need to get over it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I disagree, and totally agree with Michael!

Football is a fall and winter sport, football was started on the East Coast, where there are cold and snowy fall/winter seasons. The only reason the SB is played in warm weather/indoors is so that the fans are happy. If you're a football player, you should be used to playing in all weather, as most of them do play in all different types of weather throughout the season. Man up people, it's not spring training.

    2. Hey, disagree all day long! That is why I post the questions here! :)

And I agree, you should be used to playing in all weather. Absolutely. I just hope they don't have to move the game to Saturday!!

  44. This New York crap really pisses me off. I want the best game from both teams. We will not be seeing that. Or the best halftime from Bruno might I add. What is that poor, tiny little guy supposed to do?????? If he wears an adult sized coat, his whole body will be covered and we wont be able to see his fresh moves. He is going to shiver right of the stage.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm kind of in love with Sherman. I also would love to see them flail around in the snow, but I also have a sick sense of humor so....

    ReplyDelete
  46. Well, I do think they need to just deal with it, but moving the game would be REALLY lame. Like, if you're going to roll the dice and have the game in a typically colder area, don't be a pansy about it last minute and move it to a different night. But, I don't think anyone wants to play or watch football in a blizzard, so there's that. Also, I love Richard Sherman.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Cold weather will just be an excuse to extend the party out longer. I'm totally cool with that!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm so glad you're on board with Richard, and all the other ladies above!
He's my favorite, and I still can't get enough of that clip, terrible as it may have been. Those on-field statements can be really generic and boring, it's good to get something genuine and passionate.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Whoa! I can't believe they may move the game. Saturday night would be EVEN more difficult for me to watch in Germany so I seriously hope that does not happen because I've got to cheer on my boy Peyton!
