It's Just a Game

So have you ever been at a party and been sober when everyone else around you was hammered? And you sit there and think to yourself, gosh is that really what I look like? Slurring words, screaming yelling when you think you're talking normally, saying things you would never dream of saying out loud, most of those things you don't even mean. Crying uncontrollably and incoherently explaining the reason for your tears? Picking fights with your friend over the way she unwrapped her gum... that was the bitchiest way I've ever seen someone unwrap gum, that was intended to be a dig at me, that gum unwrapping whore.
And you find sweet pics like this on Facebook the next morning

Being sober when everyone else is drunk is interesting because it isn't like you will learn from that experience. It isn't like you are going to remember the next time you're hammered drunk after doing 6 shots of fireball to talk softer or to not take things irrationally. The heat of the moment, or the drink of the moment changes a person, it can't be stopped.

Well, last night as you may be aware, there was a little football game that was played. I could care less which team won. Well, let me rephrase that. I would be excited for either team that won. I had enjoyment in Auburn winning (yay SEC) but I also have enjoyed the way FSU's fan base has acted this season, and I would have loved seeing them get the W. For the first time in quite some time, I was genuinely neutral.

So after the game (and what a freaking game it was) when I saw Auburn fans and FSU fans start reacting on social media, it was clear to me that I was the sober person in a sea of fans drunk off competition, well and probably just drunk.

I read tweets saying, "At least our QB isn't a rapist!!" And of course there were Bama fans talking trash about Auburn, even though Bama was no where to be found in bowl game victory lane. FSU fans who just won, and should simply be cheering for their team, instead saying things to add insult to injury to heartbroken Auburn fans, like "Who is a War Eagle Now, Bitch?!." Auburn people saying crazy stuff like, "At least our cheerleaders don't have gonorrhea!!!!!"

Huh??

And I got to thinking as I watched it all unfold, is that how I get? Hammered drunk off competitiveness?

Yes, yes it is. Absolutely. And I love it.

Because it isn't just a game. It is a thrill, it is a high, it's effing depressing, it's so personal, even though it isn't personal at all,  it's the most exciting thing in the entire world, it is the most rage you will ever feel toward total strangers. It makes you want to punch a small child in the throat for wearing and cheering for the team in red and black, when he is in the house of orange and white.

And of course, no offense to ribbon twirlers, I hope to own a ribbon dancer again one day, but whoever it was that said, "It's just a game" must've been a ribbon twirler or something, because I assure you, it isn't just a game. And if I decide to take up ribbon twirling, I'll be damned if I'm not the most competitive ribbon twirler dancer that ever lived.

  1. Even though I like to pretend I don't care about football comments, I feel my fist tighten up when there's trash talk against Auburn. I know it's "just a game" but you're right, it isn't just a game, it's your team, your players, your heart that's on the line out there. When they fail, you feel like you've failed. When they win, you're on cloud 9 with them. Even though FSU won, I'm so proud of my Tigers, they played with so much heart, and that's more than I can ask for coming from a 3-9 season.

  2. I had no preference on who won either, I just enjoyed the game. As someone who is still holding a grudge over something a drunk person said to me, 2 weeks ago (while I was sober). I totally understand what you are saying. But I'm still too stubborn to forgive them.

  3. Love, love, love this! Really though, it's much more than just a game.

  4. My sister takes her sports so seriously and personally, if her team loses a big game we just avoid her for a few days.

  5. Preach on sister friend. When my team (the ECU Pirates) plays our arch nemesis (the NCSU Wolfpuppies), not only is not "just a game" but it's also the time when fans crawl out of the wood works and take to social media to bash ANYTHING they can find about either school, whether it's the NCSU fans smelling like cow manure or the Pirate ladies being slutty idiots. Gotta love a good rivalry.

  6. You just put into words everything I feel about my team. It isn't "just a game" and those people make me nuts! I love my Hokies SO much and it's so personal to me to see them succeed, and so heartbreaking when we lose. And I LOVE it all. My husband thinks I'm crazy. Countdown to next football season begins now!

  7. LOL! That quote is awesome. It is NEVER just a game for me. That is why I try not to get involved in competitions anymore....I turn ugly. Real ugly, real fast.

  8. Is it sad that I can completely relate to this? In 2007, when the Raptors lost in the last eight seconds of game 6, hammered out of my mind, I furiously stood up, throwing my bar stool from under me, slammed my drink down, said a profanity and then began to cry. Come on guys, eight seconds left!! We could have won in game 7!! Ah, who am I kidding? The Raptors suck.

  9. I don't care who won as long as my numbers hit - and they did! This girl is +$50

  10. You are amazing--This is the best description of this I have seen.

  11. AMEN. When the game was over I avoided social media for a bit. Then after seeing the first "YAY FSU" that wasn't even a knock just a well-deserved celebratory tweet I knew I needed to put the phone down until morning for my own sanity. Losing is heartbreaking.

The one thing I can't stand is when the trash-talk continues for days. Get your digs out right after the game and then let it go, or you will get punched.

  12. I love reading/watching all the reactions after big games like this - especially when the outcome wasn't necessarily expected. I am definitely guilty of getting emotionally invested and it's comforting to know that there are other crazies out there too!!

  13. you know i don't take sports that seriously, but i can see how people get into it. everyone has their thing. and no, it no longer becomes just a game. or in my case, just a concert.

  14. It's definitely so much more than just a game! The ones that really drove me nuts last night were that FSU was just lucky and didn't deserve to win. Um, have you not watched them play all season? I hate when uninformed people make statements like that!

And it's not even been 12 hours and I'm so sad college football is over. Can't we fast forward to labor day weekend?!

  16. Ughhhh I got 3rd in my pick league and would have won if Auburn held that lead. I also would have won had I kept Arkansas St. but that's another story. Point being, I nearly threw my dumbells mid-workout at my TV last night on the 100yd drive. Drunk I tell ya.

  17. GO NOLES!
Is that allowed? I'm sober, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Well I take it very seriously and as an FSU alum I can say I am thrilled we won obvi but cheers to Auburn for an amazing run for the money. It was our toughest game of the season and we had to dig deep but we did it and we deserve it. And I don't care what anyone says winning 14 straight games is not easy I don't care who you are!!! Go NOLES!!!!

  19. It is just a game and even though I am a diehard Gator.....this season I can't even talk about....but when you see people get in drunken bar fights over it I'm like "hello you aren't even playing you need to get your priorities in check". Being sober when others are drunk is quite an eye opening experience right?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I totally get that way with Ohio State and the Pats but some people are just plain crazy drunk. It is kinda funny to watch as an outside though.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Agreed! I'm a die-hard Ole Miss fan, and it's no laughing matter. I count down the days until kickoff and usually cry my way through the season. Football isn't a game, it's a way of life. But it's always important to keep sportsmanlike manners in check, which can often be a challenge.

  22. preach it! preach it! preach it!!!!!! EVERYTHING is a competition. EVERYTHING.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have literally stopped reading a blog because they were a Michigan fan, so I totally get it. My child is sometimes scared of me during games. That shit is real life.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hahahah love it!!! I got to go to the Rose Bowl this year and cheer Michigan State on and it was freakin awesome. I can just imagine what the energy (and level of drunkenness) was in that place last night!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love this analogy! The rantings on social media are totally like drunk people. If they played your drinking game they probably were drunk.

    ReplyDelete
  26. OMG, I was that sober person in a sea of drunk people on NYE as I decided to be the DD and took it VERY seriously since I was sure I'd hit at least 100 cop checkpoints on the way home. (spoiler alert, I didn't hit any) Also, can we perhaps start a competitive league of ribbon twirlers? Because I would kill that shit.

    ReplyDelete
  27. hahaa I think I am a "ribbon twirler". This post made me lol...I get mad at sports like gymnastics at the Olympics, so I get you girl. I'm still not over McKayla Maroni falling on her butt in Beijing. You're a riot...awesome blog:)

  28. I usually hold myself with class... but after a few drinks it all goes out the window. I am always that girl talking too loud and like Elaine on Seinfeld that's the key to the vault. I'll spill all my secrets, although I'm good about keeping everyone else's secrets thankfully. But anything about me? Just give me a few glasses of wine or shots of my favorite flavored vodka and you can have my life story. Embarrassing.

Since last night was a "school night" I didn't witness any of the trash talking til this morning, but I'm glad the noles won.

  29. I always find it entertaining what sore losers some people are, the true character comes out and it is confirmed what complete idiots some people are.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I am sure this is true everywhere, but football is not just a game. Especially in the SEC. Every person breathes it, lives, it, loves it, is it in some cases. It totally is a way of life.

And I hope that all the Auburn haters out there finally know that we came to play that game and we owned that 1st half. Yes, we were beaten in the 2nd half, but I am SO incredibly proud of my Tigers that my heart grew 3 times its original size. I know that they did a great job and made FSU earn their win.

I don't know why Auburn has so many haters. We have been the underdogs all season and I truly feel like we proved that we deserved to be there. Sigh.

    End rant.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Love this post! I feel you have to be passionate about something, why not it be football?! I find it very entertaining to read everyone's hater posts after games. Whatever happened to keeping it classy? Everyone is all quick to call out another teams fan base but EVERY team has THOSE fans.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh man, this post is spot on. I mean, I get personally offended when my favorite player goes to a team I despise. Why? These players don't know me, they don't care that I want them to stay on my team for less money just because I like them. I should just get over myself, but loving the rage that comes with football ( and hockey, for me) is all part of loving the game.

    ReplyDelete
  33. hahaha this is great. I honestly get so wrapped up in the sports when I'm watching them that I am most definitely that obnoxious girl... and then when football is over for me & everyone else is still freaking out I'm like wait... am I that annoying? Probably... but I'll still be that way next season.

  34. hahaha SAME! this couldn't be so more true!

    ReplyDelete
  35. This couldn't be more true! Although I don't agree with hateful comments that are (most likely) not true, I do believe in getting riled up during a game, ecstatic over a win, and defeated over a loss. I was not one of the Auburn fans last night saying "oh well it was just a game" but I wasn't saying "F you FSU" either. I was angry and sad that we didn't win, but that wouldn't justify being hateful.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Haha.. I'm not sure I agree. But that's okay!! I get what it's like to love a team.. I also understand how much you can HATE another team too. I am very recently finding that following sports and caring (as much as my husband does about the Leafs) is downright exhausting. But, that's what it means to be a sports fan I suppose!
Being passionate for something is always a good thing! Just no more punching kids in the throat Sarah..... ;)

  37. this may be my favorite post in all of the blogging world. like, I don't even know what else to say.

if winning wasn't everything, they wouldn't keep score.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Now, I'm no sports fan, but my boyfriend is a die-hard ALL SPORTS fan, so I know that it's not 'just a game'. If I ever said that to him, it'd probably be a deal breaker. HA!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Haha, being the sober one at a party is like a painful educational experience, one that I try and avoid at all cost I don't need to be reminded how stupid I look when I am getting my sip on lol. I totally agree with this post though, I get a bit to competitive even over a game of beer pong, I am not a good loser. So anything that has a winner and a loser is never just a game to me!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Seriously, the reactions in our house during and after Cougar or Seahawks games is always intense. It's more fun when you get into it!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Omg I love you for this post. I'm not the biggest football fan, but I do love me some college action. And I'm a hardcore college basketball fan. Sometimes I tell myself "a game is just a game," but then I think about all the unity and representation and how the colors and the players mean so, so much more and brings us so much more, and I shut myself up real quick.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Even though I am not a fan of sport I do get annoyed when I hear all the trash that is talked about different sport stars.,

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm probably competitive to the point that it is a bit of a fault...I don't care what the game is losing sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Nailed it as usual. 1. I've been the sober girl at the party for almost 10 months and it better be over soon. 2. Luckily, my husband and I like the same teams or you better believe I'd be yelling these obscenities from the other side of the living room.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I love this post. SO true
I think I am going to have my husband start reading your blog, but I am slightly worried he'll leave me for you and your amazing football charm and knowledge. ;)

  46. I had quite a few drinks, but handled myself with class on Twitter and Facebook. I wanted to say SUCK IT, SEC LOVERS, but I get points for keeping it to myself.

  47. FINALLY someone gets it. Enough of this PC let's all root for everyone crap. I'm ecstatic FS led by our hometown boy crushed Auburn's dreams in the last few seconds. Yea, let them make a "got a second" joke now.
And my blood boils every time I see a rapist joke.
    I need to stop now.
    AWESOME post.

  48. Le sighhhhh....speaking my language again! That last quote describes me 100%, I am ALWAYS losing friends over a football game. I don't really consider it losing though, obviously they weren't around for the long haul. I'm an exuberant sports fan. hahaha.

  52. "And if I decide to take up ribbon twirling, I'll be damned if I'm not the most competitive ribbon twirler dancer that ever lived."

Yes. That is definitely me in a couple of sentences. As a metaphorical "ribbon-twirler," I can attest to still feeling competitive about everything...And your "About" page is right- my boyfriend would DEFINITELY thank me for reading this post :)

  53. I can't figure out how to comment to this post. I hope you understand how much of a sports fan/competitor of all things I am...and I get it, defending your team until you're blue in the face and your world crashing down when you're team decides they'd like to play suck ball are things I'm well accustomed to. BUT sometimes I have to tell myself that it IS just a game and although I am heavily invested in these teams, there's more to life than a ball and what happens around it. The personal/non personal thing is fun when you're sober...it doesn't hit as hard as when you're drunk...and that's kind of where people cross the line, start beating each other to a pulp, get stabbed, etc. I don't mean to get so serious about it, because that stuff doesn't happen often, but in their case, I wish those people realized "it's JUST a game."

    ReplyDelete
  54. I have a huge dislike for being the ONLY sober person in the room. I seriously can't handle it. I will drink more to be on their level if I have to. Ok maybe I did in my 20's. Now I just try to avoid it, or call a cab so I can join the fun. ;)

I didn't watch the BCS - after my Tide did SUCH a piss poor job in their bowl game I was so done and over with football this year. Originally I had wanted to root for Auburn - SEC, SEC, SEC! But, after our bowl lost it was one of those prideful things of ... I don't want to listen to Auburn fans rub the win in my face all. year. long. So I started hoping for FSU to win. Seems like a lot of the mistakes AU made in the BCS Championship were similar to the ones Alabama made in their bowl game AND during the Iron Bowl so it was nice to see the AU fans have to eat their words (lots were giving Alabama grief for how they handled stuff)... yada yada yada next year is a new year and I'm interested to see how it all pans out. I'm sort of excited that Auburn is a force again - it's nice to be on the edge of your seat, even if losing is the outcome - it's nicer to win.

And you're right... part of me can say "It's just a game." but that is usually when my team isn't winning. When AL or the Steelers are playing - I am calm on the outside but inside I"m that crazy ass mom that went mental kicking and punching that Oklahoma fan at the Sugar Bowl this year. So much so my friends posted it on my Facebook wall saying it was me ;) haha

  55. BRAVO! I'm such a loyal fan to my team, even when my friends/fellow alumni bash me for not cheering for my alma mater when they played my favorite team (in my defense, I've cheered for my team since I was little, and my alma mater just took lots of money....plus my team won last year and this year, so I'm better anyway!!)
