13 Restaurant and Food Photography Tips for Bloggers

When I first started Dallas Love List, I googled and pinterest searched Restaurant and Food Photography Tips for Bloggers and honestly found nothing of substance. The posts were mostly back and forth on if it was respectful or not to take photos of your food in a restaurant. I always want to be respectful, but at the same time it is 2017 and, well, people do it every day. The restaurant food photography tips post needs to be written.

The best way to take great food photos is to feel comfortable behind the camera, whichever camera it is that you use. I use both iPhone and DSLR -- I use this camera and this lens which will TRANSFORM your pics for just over $100.

I wish I had this list when I first started, but here are my go-to tips and poses for taking photos of your food in restaurants.

1. GET OVER YOURSELF
I'm listing this first because if you want to be successful at this, you've gotta get over yourself and get over worrying what other people at other tables are thinking. Yes, you're standing up and taking a million photos and people might giggle.

Those people who giggle will also be the same one liking your photo and tagging the buddy they're sitting with saying, "Hey @iamsarahwebb this looks soooo good we have to go here!!!"

When someone tags their friend in your photo, that's the holy grail! So, get over yourself and get the shots you need and quit worrying if you look stupid or not.

Spoiler: you do look stupid and you can laugh all the way to the bank (and by bank I mean all the free meals you're going to get).

2. Cut Your Sandwich Up and Stack It
If you order a burger or sandwich, cut it up and stack it together and hold it for the camera. A burger on a plate, boring. You can't see the pink inside and all of the other goodies like cheese, cheese and the cheese. Stacking it allows you to show off the core of the sandwiches and gives your audience a way better visual.

More examples of the sandwich stack here | here | here

3. Ask your friend to reach for something
The NUMBER ONE rule of thumb is #CameraEatsFirst, and we will get to that in a second, but if someone is super HANGRY and they start reaching for a fry or chip, let them do it and take their picture. This is probably the weirdest thing I've ever said, but I like CB's hands (BAHHA ๐Ÿ˜‚) and I always think they look good in my photos! My hands on the other hand, woof.

More examples of "the reach" here | here | here

4. Sit at the bar
I won't drill the "Natural LIGHT" tip here, because in restaurants it just isn't feasible. Many are dark intentionally to add ambiance. Also, I have no cure for that, that sucks when that happens. You're screwed.

What you can do at a dark restaurant is sit at the bar though. The bar is usually toward the front, and thus closer to the front doors and windows. Alas, better chance for light there. The backdrop of your photos will be walls of liquor/beer/wine which usually looks great as that slightly blurred backdrop.

More examples of bar photos here | here

5. Get up and leave with your food
We were eating at a place called Fat Chicken in Trinity Groves, and I spotted a waiting area with red picnic tables when we walked in. I knew I was going to get that little table as my background. So I grabbed our deviled eggs, the cute napkin that was on the table and the menu and left.

Does CB hate me --- sometimes. Until I take him to unlimited food and wine events for free and all is forgiven. It's annoying and worth it at the same time.

I don't do the "get up and leave" that often because as awesome as the photo usually turns out, it's so rude. Here is an example of one other time I did.

6. Drinks in the Air
This is my go-to, I pretty much do this every other photo.
Make sure you tag #DrinksintheAir while you're at it.

My entire page is pretty much drinks in the air but check out some other examples here | here | here

7. Check Instagram Before You Order
I've asked bartenders, "What is your most photogenic drink?" and 100% of the time I've not gotten something I want to put on insta. When I think photogenic, I think snacks and garnishes galore. Bartenders think pink or purple with a lemon twist.

I like to check three things before I order: what the restaurant has posted, what the restaurant has been tagged in, and the restaurant's geo tag feed.

I had already seen that crepe on instagram and knew it was a good choice!

8. Cheers Other Things Besides Drinks
A typical go-to lifestyle/fashion blogger pose is the cheersing of the drinks. Now, I have that pose a lot on my feed, but it isn't very original. Next time, try cheersing something other than your drinks. I think you'll dig the uniqueness of that shot.

9. Use Props like Sunglasses, Newspapers and Bags
Forewarning: It's hard to not see yourself in the mirror of the sunglasses. I usually just try to smile when I take the pic.

A post shared by Dallas Love List (@dallaslovelist) on

Other examples of props I've used here | here | here

10. Don't forget sauces, they're pretty
Many restaurants, especially BBQ, Mexican and Chicken places offer a variety of sauces. Ask if you can have one of each and line them up in your photo.

Other use of sauces here | here

11. Pick your food up and show the camera what you're eating
Ask your friend to take your photo, or ask your friend to show you their food. Have them hold the burger/sandwich/drink outstretched to the camera. I don't use this one on Dallas Love List very often, but it works great as more of a lifestyle shot @iamsarahwebb.

A post shared by Sarah Webb / Venus Trapped (@iamsarahwebb) on

12. Eat on the Patio
This is obviously a no brainer for better lighting, but I'm listing it anyway.
SIT ON THE PATIO, your photos will not even compare to the ones taken inside.

13. Most Important Rule | Camera Eats First
The half eaten food photo is not a good one unless it's a donut. Camera ALWAYS eats first.

I'll end on that most important rule, the golden rule. Treat others how you would want to be treated, and make sure you don't eat until everyone has the photos they need.

๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

If you liked these tips, I hope you'll follow me on INSTAGRAM (even if you don't live in Dallas) for more inspiration!!

The Best Flight Tips You Must Know Before You Fly Again

A couple of weeks ago, CB and I flew to Virginia to visit my mom. CB reads The Chive religiously, and saw an article with some tips on flying that we wanted to try out for this flight. Little did we know that not only would they work, some were mind blowingly successful. Somehow, I even stumbled on a few new tips of my own during this flight. It's safe to say this was one of the best, most successful flights. Below are the tips and tricks we used on our flights.

The Best Secret Flight Tips for Flying

1.  If You Booze, Tip Your Flight Attendant
This past trip we took was on Virgin America. The results were mind blowing and I'm not being dramatic.

We ordered two drinks off the touch pad at our seat, one vodka orange juice for me and one jack and coke for CB. When the Flight Attendant brought the drinks, I saw CB take out his wallet, handing him a couple of bucks. The guy's demeanor totally transformed. Not that he was even remotely rude before, he just was REALLY REALLY REALLY eager to accommodate us, "Can I get you all anything else? Another can of seltzer? Another coke? More Ice? Anything at all, please don't hesitate to ask."

The Best Tips for Flying

We ordered two more drinks from the touch pad a little later. Another jack and coke for CB, and a glass of wine for me. Out came the flight attendant with the half bottle sized wine, rather than just the glass, and two jack and coke mini bottles rather than just one. At this point, all we had tipped was two dollars.

The Best Tips for Flying

Because we were on vacation, and amused, we ordered one last round. I switched back to vodka soda (I jump around a lot, so sue me), and CB ordered another Jack and Coke. Out comes, you guessed it, more than we ordered. Two vodka mini bottles and two Jack mini bottles. CB gave him a 5 dollar bill, and come to find out he totally cleared out our tab that we had paid for on the touch screen. The two of us were feeling REALLY REALLY GOOD for only $7. SEVEN DOLLARS! WOW!

Moral of the Story: Tip your flight attendant.

2.  When Flying With A Friend, Book the Aisle and Window Seat.
This worked for us going to Virginia and heading back to Dallas. When we initially booked our seats, I booked the window seat for me, and the aisle seat for CB. The reason we did this is in the event the flight isn't full, it is possible no one will select the middle seat and you'll have the whole row to yourself.

Plus, someone will always be willing to switch seats with you if they're in the middle and you're on the aisle or window. No matter what, you'll get to sit together... might as well try and get the whole row!

3.  Forgot Your Headphones? DO NOT buy them from the airport convenience store.
I got to the airport and realized I forgot my favorite Frends headphones that I spent an entire weekend in NYC shopping for. I went to that Hudson News store that every airport has, picked up a pair of earbud headphones... $35!! They wanted $35!?! ACK!

I know I've seen certain flights sell headphones before, so I went and asked the lady at Virgin's front counter if they'd be selling headphones on this flight. She said I could buy them from her, or on the flight for just $3. I said, "Oh! Perfect! Yes, I'll take a pair."

I started to reach for my wallet and she goes, "You know what, I really don't care. Go ahead and just take it  for free!"

They were decent headphones too. I mean, certainly nothing I'll cherish for years to come, but certainly good enough for the rest of the weekend.

4.  Electronic Device Dead? No Problem. The Majority of Planes Now Have Outlets Under Your Seat.
On the flight back, my phone was totally dead and I couldn't find anywhere to plug my phone in at the airport. Why airports don't have more plugs, I'll never know. I didn't stress though, because all Virgin planes (and most American planes, which I fly for work) have power outlets under, or in between, your seat.

The next time you're flying, reach under your seat to see if there is a power or USB outlet! I believe you'll find either power or USB outlets on the following airlines: Virgin, American, United, Delta, Air Canada and certain Jet Blue flights.

5.  Scan, Print and Email photocopies of your Driver's License and/or Passport.
The last time my mom visited me, she had a scare where she thought she lost her Driver's License. Luckily, she found it, but before you leave you should make photocopies of your identification, as well as emailing yourself a digital copy. If something terrible were to happen, and you lost your ID, this could seriously help. This might not be ENOUGH to get on the plane, but it will certainly put you in the right direction to proving your identity and getting through security.

I'm hoping these tips weren't your everyday, run-of-the-mill tips you've heard before! What are some other tips that you've used when preparing for a flight, during a flight or after a flight?! I'd love to hear them and add them to my list!

Girlboss Tech Hacks You Might Not Know

stockphoto via

I've never read Girlboss, so I apologize if I'm using that phrase wrong. I was going to use the term "Working Girl", but when I think of that term I immediately think of hookers. I'm currently knee deep in re-watching season one of Dexter with the Ice Truck Killer, so I'd like to avoid anything talking about hookers. I'm having enough nightmares as it is. These hacks are really for anyone that uses an electronic piece of equipment on a daily basis. So, errybody.

Discovering these hacks has been a lengthy process. I've either had a problem, and stalked the internet trying to find a solution, or accidentally stumbled on a hack that I now can't live without. So, here we go!

1. Typing Emojis On A Mac Computer

Many programs and websites on your Mac actually allow you to use emojis, you just have to know how to type them. To use an emoji on Twitter, Facebook, iMessage, Email, Instagram...

To type an emoji on your Mac:
Hold Down: Control + Command + Spacebar

2. The One Trick to Improving Every iPhone Picture You Take

Did you know you can automatically place a filter, a very good filter might I add, on every picture you take on your iPhone. This is one of those tricks I accidentally stumbled on, but it is a game changer. I never take a picture without this setting turned on. Here's how:

To Turn the "Chrome" Filter ON For Every iPhone Picture

1. Open to your Camera App. In the bottom right corner, you'll see an icon made up of 3 round gray circles. Click that icon.

2. You will be presented with several automatic filter options.
Select Chrome.

3. Those three dots in the bottom right corner will now be colored.

I personally will still edit my photos in Afterlight before posting to Instagram, but the difference that little filter makes is incredible. You can also add that filter to pictures you've already taken. Here's how.

To Apply the "Chrome" Filter to Old Pictures

1. Open your Camera Roll and select a picture.
Click Edit on the top right corner.

2. Select the "Chrome" Filter from the choices at the bottom.

3. Click done and you're good to go. As you can see, it just gives your pictures a little something extra, don't you think?

3. Quickly Resize Images/Elements in Photoshop

I'm not sure if this one is just me being dumb and everyone already knew how this worked,  but when I discovered this I felt like my world changed. I never could figure out how to make an image smaller/bigger in photoshop without distorting it. Now I can.

How to Resize Items in Photoshop Without Distortion

When you try and manually drag the corners of an image/element to resize it, it will get distorted, like this...

 To resize without distortion...
1. Click one of the corners of your image/element

2.  Change Width (W) and Height (H) percentage at the top of the screen.

4. Flip Clock Screen Saver

How many office spaces have you seen on Pinterest with that awesome flip clock screen saver on their computer?

Yes that's my desk thank you for asking.

To download that screen saver
Just go here

5. Use Siri to Take a Nap or Sleep Later Than Planned

Setting an alarm is maybe the most tedious thing in the world. I'm of course being dramatic, except for the fact that I'm not being dramatic at all.

You: "Wake Me Up in One Hour and 15 Minutes"
Siri: "I've Set an Alarm for 3:30pm"

6. Take a Burst of Photos

When I was trying to take this picture, the "burst" photo setting was helpful to get the right shot.

To take several pictures in a row

To Activate Burst Photos:
Simply Hold Down The iPhone Camera Button

7. Charge Your Phone Twice as Fast

Need your phone charged, like, yesterday?

Put your phone in airplane mode while charging.
It will charge twice as fast.

So those are my tech hacks I've picked up over the last few months. Have you found any that are not on my list that will change our life?!?! Tell me in the comments!

Instagram Hashtags for Bloggers That Will Triple Likes

As I was working on this post, all I could say to myself, over and over again was, "FASCINATING!" I'm going to get right into it because I really think you'll agree. This post is all about Instagram Hashtags for Bloggers to use, that will skyrocket likes.

Instagram Hashtags for Bloggers that will Triple Likes

There are hashtags that I have been using lately to boost my instagram posts, and I had no idea the origin of the hashtag. I wanted to compile a list of the best hashtags for bloggers to use to increase their likes, find the person/account who created the hashtag, and then test the hashtags for effectiveness. Throughout the duration of this experiment, if you could refer to me as Bill Nye that would be great, thanks. Childhood goals ✓

Nastasia, the creator of Dame Traveler was kind enough to say what she looks for when curating photos for the #dametraveler gallery!

"Uniqueness. Anyone can take a photo in front of the Eiffel Tower but what angle is it taken from? How is it framed? Is it natural? Is the lighting creating a magical effect? I also look for high resolution/crisp, non-filtered photos that take you straight to dream world. These are things to consider when taking a Dame Traveler shot!

The definition of the word ‘Dame’ in the dictionary is:
“The title of a woman who has been awarded of high ranking or of an empire.”

I chose #DameTraveler because I wanted to exemplify strength, fearlessness and courage. When a female travels solo, she throws caution to the wind and she trusts the universe to protect her while she uses her instincts to make strong decisions and that to me is very brave."

example 2. #bandofun || 12k
1. Take Your City + Add the word Blogger = #dallasblogger

2. If you have a product in your picture, find out the hashtag that company uses
i.e. If you have a ban.do planner in your image, tag #bandofun to be featured

I created an Instagram account a few days ago for my blog design site, @socialandchic_. I had 0 followers. I repeat, I HAD ZERO FOLLOWERS. I didn't tell anyone to go like my photo, and I didn't link to my photo from my personal Instagram account. I wanted to post a picture and see what kind of likes I could get from using these hashtags.

I chose 30 hashtags from the list above, the ones I thought most related to my picture. Remember the Hashtag Limit is 30 Tags. I posted my picture and had my hashtags copied and ready to paste. I prefer to post the giant list of hashtags in a comment rather than in my caption. I think most people would agree with that.

I sat back to watch, thinking I'd get a handful of likes. I'd have been satisfied if I had gotten 12.
Then this happened. *Insert Jaw Drop

A photo posted by Social + Chic Design Studio (@socialandchic_) on

THAT SAYS 150 LIKES.
I GOT 150 LIKES WITH NO FOLLOWERS, SOLELY USING HASHTAGS.
I'm going to say it again... "Fascinating!!!!

Below are are the hashtags I used in that above image.
I'd recommend making a note in your phone filled with specific hashtag sets, based on the type of photo your posting, so you can easily copy and paste.

That was the hardest I've ever worked on a post, ever. I need a nap.
