13 Restaurant and Food Photography Tips for Bloggers

When I first started Dallas Love List, I googled and pinterest searched Restaurant and Food Photography Tips for Bloggers and honestly found nothing of substance. The posts were mostly back and forth on if it was respectful or not to take photos of your food in a restaurant. I always want to be respectful, but at the same time it is 2017 and, well, people do it every day. The restaurant food photography tips post needs to be written.

The best way to take great food photos is to feel comfortable behind the camera, whichever camera it is that you use. I use both iPhone and DSLR -- I use this camera and this lens which will TRANSFORM your pics for just over $100.

I wish I had this list when I first started, but here are my go-to tips and poses for taking photos of your food in restaurants.

1. GET OVER YOURSELF
I'm listing this first because if you want to be successful at this, you've gotta get over yourself and get over worrying what other people at other tables are thinking. Yes, you're standing up and taking a million photos and people might giggle.

Those people who giggle will also be the same one liking your photo and tagging the buddy they're sitting with saying, "Hey @iamsarahwebb this looks soooo good we have to go here!!!"

When someone tags their friend in your photo, that's the holy grail! So, get over yourself and get the shots you need and quit worrying if you look stupid or not.

Spoiler: you do look stupid and you can laugh all the way to the bank (and by bank I mean all the free meals you're going to get).

2. Cut Your Sandwich Up and Stack It
If you order a burger or sandwich, cut it up and stack it together and hold it for the camera. A burger on a plate, boring. You can't see the pink inside and all of the other goodies like cheese, cheese and the cheese. Stacking it allows you to show off the core of the sandwiches and gives your audience a way better visual.

More examples of the sandwich stack here | here | here

3. Ask your friend to reach for something
The NUMBER ONE rule of thumb is #CameraEatsFirst, and we will get to that in a second, but if someone is super HANGRY and they start reaching for a fry or chip, let them do it and take their picture. This is probably the weirdest thing I've ever said, but I like CB's hands (BAHHA ๐Ÿ˜‚) and I always think they look good in my photos! My hands on the other hand, woof.

More examples of "the reach" here | here | here

4. Sit at the bar
I won't drill the "Natural LIGHT" tip here, because in restaurants it just isn't feasible. Many are dark intentionally to add ambiance. Also, I have no cure for that, that sucks when that happens. You're screwed.

What you can do at a dark restaurant is sit at the bar though. The bar is usually toward the front, and thus closer to the front doors and windows. Alas, better chance for light there. The backdrop of your photos will be walls of liquor/beer/wine which usually looks great as that slightly blurred backdrop.

5. Get up and leave with your food
We were eating at a place called Fat Chicken in Trinity Groves, and I spotted a waiting area with red picnic tables when we walked in. I knew I was going to get that little table as my background. So I grabbed our deviled eggs, the cute napkin that was on the table and the menu and left.

Does CB hate me --- sometimes. Until I take him to unlimited food and wine events for free and all is forgiven. It's annoying and worth it at the same time.

I don't do the "get up and leave" that often because as awesome as the photo usually turns out, it's so rude. Here is an example of one other time I did.

6. Drinks in the Air
This is my go-to, I pretty much do this every other photo.
Make sure you tag #DrinksintheAir while you're at it.

My entire page is pretty much drinks in the air but check out some other examples here | here | here

7. Check Instagram Before You Order
I've asked bartenders, "What is your most photogenic drink?" and 100% of the time I've not gotten something I want to put on insta. When I think photogenic, I think snacks and garnishes galore. Bartenders think pink or purple with a lemon twist.

I like to check three things before I order: what the restaurant has posted, what the restaurant has been tagged in, and the restaurant's geo tag feed.

I had already seen that crepe on instagram and knew it was a good choice!

8. Cheers Other Things Besides Drinks
A typical go-to lifestyle/fashion blogger pose is the cheersing of the drinks. Now, I have that pose a lot on my feed, but it isn't very original. Next time, try cheersing something other than your drinks. I think you'll dig the uniqueness of that shot.

9. Use Props like Sunglasses, Newspapers and Bags
Forewarning: It's hard to not see yourself in the mirror of the sunglasses. I usually just try to smile when I take the pic.

10. Don't forget sauces, they're pretty
Many restaurants, especially BBQ, Mexican and Chicken places offer a variety of sauces. Ask if you can have one of each and line them up in your photo.

Other use of sauces here | here

11. Pick your food up and show the camera what you're eating
Ask your friend to take your photo, or ask your friend to show you their food. Have them hold the burger/sandwich/drink outstretched to the camera. I don't use this one on Dallas Love List very often, but it works great as more of a lifestyle shot @iamsarahwebb.

12. Eat on the Patio
This is obviously a no brainer for better lighting, but I'm listing it anyway.
SIT ON THE PATIO, your photos will not even compare to the ones taken inside.

13. Most Important Rule | Camera Eats First
The half eaten food photo is not a good one unless it's a donut. Camera ALWAYS eats first.

I'll end on that most important rule, the golden rule. Treat others how you would want to be treated, and make sure you don't eat until everyone has the photos they need.

The iPhone Camera Setting that will make you break up with your DSLR

I've only been meaning to write this post for the past three months. When I got my new iPhone7 plus, there was really only ONE reason I wanted it and that was for the camera. This one feature on the new iPhone has single handedly caused me to stop carrying around my DSLR. I'm not joking, I have not picked up the DSLR since I bought the new iPhone.

Ok, you ready for this? These are all taken on the iPhone....

The iPhone7 Plus has a setting called Portrait mode. You'll find it right in the camera app, in between "Square" and "Photo"...

Bye bye clunky DSLR, hellooooooo iPhone!
This is an Instagram Husband TOTAL. GAME. CHANGER.

Now, obviously, professional DSLR cameras and lenses are just WAY better than this, but I don't have a professional DSLR, I just have a basic Rebel T3i and a 50mm lens. I honestly think the iphone is comparable to the photos I take on my DSLR.

Here are two side by side, can you tell which is iPhone and which is DSLR?

If you can't tell why should I??

Oh yeah, and the puppers on the right is the former shelter pup Gizmo, who we took out for a day on the town and showed off on Dallas Love List, then he was adopted a few days later!! Pretty awesome right?

This is obviously NOT sponsored by apple, but damn I sure wish it was and I got my iPhone for free ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

I know there is ONE TRILLION photo editing posts out there, but I'll be back with the 1,000,000,000,001 post on photo editing in a second installment on how I edit my portrait mode photos!

10 Instagram Hashtags for Home Renovation and Interior Design Inspiration

Interior Design Hashtags

A few weeks ago I told you how CB and I were planning on starting a backyard renovation. If I've said it once I've said it 100 times -- no, literally, we will be sitting on the couch watching Jeopardy and I'll turn and look at CB and say... -- DANNNNGGG I love this house. I really do adore our home, but when we moved in we knew there were several projects we could tackle over the years to make it even better.

In addition to landscaping the backyard, some of those projects include installing a glass shower door in our guest bathroom, expanding the master bedroom closet space, turning my office into a walk in closet, running power to our garage and installing a garage door opener, extending the front porch patio, paving our second driveway and finally getting around to painting the various rooms in our house. Needless to say, we have lots of projects.

If you're like us, and looking to do several different projects but not quite sure what you want your final masterpiece to look like, I've got some instagram hashtags you should be following for your home renovation inspiration! These hashtags all focus on home improvement and interior design.

How To Grow Your Instagram FAST

I'm too lazy to do this research, but I'm fairly certain that was the longest break I've ever taken from blogging. For the past two weeks, we have been moving warehouses at work and I have been so dang tired when I got home that I just had no energy to get out the laptop and start typing.

I also have a confession to make. I've really turned my focus to building Dallas Love List and let VTIM take a back seat, both on Instagram and on this blog. It is just so darn fun to build up Dallas Love List. It grows so quickly and quite frankly... it is pretty easy.

Did I mention that I think everyone should start a local instagram account for your city????????

As a bit of a catch up, seeing as I've pretty much been MIA for a month, CB and I decided to do a NO SPEND NOVEMBER. We knew December was going to be a doozy as far as expenses go (oh, hi, I'll be in NYC by 11pm tonight) so we made a deal to not spend any money in November.

We did SO MUCH FUN STUFF though. How, you ask? Well, in our No Spend November deal (let's call it NSN) we decided that we could only do something if it was free. Although I am getting a few invites for Dallas Love List here and there, they certainly aren't flying in for me. So, if we wanted to go have fun, I had to go out and ask for it.

Here are just a few of the fun things we did in November -- THAT COST NO DOLLARS.

Building a Local Instagram Account vs. Personal Instagram Account

Alright kids, it has been about a month since I updated on the progress with Dallas Love List so I thought I'd come back with a few new points of interest. I know a few of you are following along, or have even started your own local Instagram account recently.

For those who don't know, I'll give you the quick rundown. I started Dallas Love List - a local Dallas-based Insta account on June 2nd.

I have two posts about it

The account is currently right about 5,100 followers in just over 4 months, which is fantastic!  There are though, a few things that have been eye opening and somewhat strange when you compare it to a personal blog account.

1. I realize I'm not just rolling, elbows deep, in 30k followers or anything, but I've made peace with the fact that I don't foresee getting paid for anything I do on this account.
I don't think cash money is in the cards with this account, and I'm oddly ok with that. It is all about what is worth it to you. Free dinner, entertainment and drinks is worth it to me. Just keep in mind, monetization on local accounts may be quite difficult. Invites, though, will be prevalent.

2. I didn't realize most events would be with strangers.

Maybe this is dumb thinking, but I assumed that CB and I would just get invited to dinner on our schedule.

For example, I assumed I'd get emails that said something like this, "We'd love to have you in for dinner one night, just let us know when you are free!"

That is NOT the case. The majority of invites, thus far, have been to what's called a media dinner. A media dinner is basically long tables and giant group seating. Everyone gets the same meal, same drinks, same desserts.

You sit at a table with strangers. For example, my first dinner I sat at a table with people I'd never met before. We all had to make small talk for two hours. Meh, I'm not sure how I feel about this side of things.

Now, of course, I'm starting to see a lot of the same faces over and over again. I guess the point is to make new friends, but currently, I can't say I'm enjoying sitting for hours with people I know nothing about.

It also feels a bit competitive, seeing as we are all going for the same Instagram market.

3. You'll get to hook your friends UP!
This is my favorite new realization so far. I got an invite to go to a free Soul Cycle + Brunch class last Friday. I was SOOOO pumped until I saw it was Friday morning at 9:30am. I don't have a flexible schedule, and I was broken hearted to decline it.

Then a lightbulb went off, could I send a friend in my place? They said they would love that, and I sent my friend Heather who has a flexible schedule. She loved it, I got a photo for the gram, everyone won! I've since gotten to hook my friends up with free beer, food and even beauty events that I was unable to attend.

I've stopped saying no to events, just because I'm not in town or have a prior commitment. Here are some photos my friends took at various events for me... not bad right???

A local instagram account is so different from your personal blog account, but I absolutely recommend starting one. You'll have so much fun exploring your own city and trying new restaurants.

If you have any questions at all about starting or building a local instagram account, just leave them in the comments below! I'd also LOVE to hear any success stories or tips you have found on building your instagram account!
